About this deal

This is so they actually drive into the ground when you hit them, rather than merely frustrating you half to death. 3. Cut Your Wattle Fence Weavers

For example, take a look at this image of a Tudor home: it’s part of the Weald and Downland Living Museum, located a bit north of Chichester. Unlike the wattle hurdle maker, the gate hurdle maker was historically a village worker rather than a woodland worker, transporting his raw material to the village workshop. Gate hurdle making was widespread in Hampshire and Berkshire, where it was needed to supply the demands of the sheep farmers on the downs there. Baghurst, Hampshire, was the best-known centre of the gate hurdle trade but by 1959, the last of the gate hurdle makers there was forced by economic circumstances to find alternative work (Jenkins, 1978).

What’s Inside:

If you need to abandon the idea of wattle, you can use a sawsall to cut pallets in half to create garden bed forms. They can be kept upright with t-posts. You’ll want a t-post pounder AND puller (in case you need to move them) and a good pair of ear plugs. Since my dog can get over the lower section, I’ll create another, taller section behind the shorter one. It should take me a few hours is all. A gentleman on YouTube named Clive Smith in the UK can teach you how to make movable sections of fence. These can be used to shore up weak places or as garden gates. Whichever wood you choose, the stakes (sometimes called sales), or uprights, should be strong. Hard wood is usually a better choice. Note that if you choose to use willow for the uprights, the cut stakes will live on, re-root and grow. You will need to trim them each year to keep your ‘fedge’ in shape. The upright stakes are sometimes called “sales” and the saplings called ‘weavers’.Hazel, willow, sweet chestnut, plum, forsythiaor any supple, long, straight, slender saplings make good weavers.

In 2014, she and her husband moved to their forever home in the country. She graduated from allotment gardening to organically managing 1/3 of an acre of land, including a mature fruit orchard, which she has turned into a productive forest garden. The yield from the garden is increasing year on year – rapidly approaching an annual weight in produce of almost 1 ton.

What Exactly is Wattle?

Foraging is the cheapest option, of course – I’m guessing that’s not an option for you? Try to think of materials that are similar but more available near you. Have you tried looking for bamboo bundles? What about other materials like Halyard rope for ship rigging? Of course, the cost increases might not be palatable to you. Some you’ll use; some will be waste. As you sort the branches, you’ll be able to discern the useful parts from the others. That’s why sorting is an important next step. Sorting the Branches I have been crafting various coppice products, specialising in woven hazel wattle hurdles and continuous woven hazel fencing, in Suffolk since 1998. Hurdle fencing makes a very attractive natural fence or screen for your garden and is very durable and resilient to the wind. They can also be used for decorative interior ceiling and wall finishes. I also undertake many aspects of hedgerow management including hedge laying, and supply coppiced material for several uses including riverbank restoration.

If you’re making your fence during a dry period or a drought spell, you can soak the ground a few hours before stake installation. This will have 6 to 8 holes drilled into it, the same diameter as your “uprights”. The jig will hold the panel firm whilst construction takes place. The “uprights” need to be made from older, heavier wood. I use half-split hazel stakes around 3–4 inches in diameter, sharpened at one end to make a point. As an example: for a three-foot fence, you need around a 4 to 4.5-foot stake. Mark a jagged line around the area where you would like to install the fencing. For a straight fence, use a straight wall, and if you want some curve in your fence, use a garden hose for a base to build the fence. The materials also varied from place to place, depending on what was locally available. The material was cut and sorted in winter, and the hurdles made in summer.

What you Need to Make a Sturdy Wattle Fence

Map out where you’re going to place the posts before you start. This way you end up with neat, tidy lines, rather than something that looks like a toddler’s scrawl. The stake length (height)depends on the desired fence height. But don’t forget to account for the part that will go into the ground!

The plant needs to be able to rejuvenate and regrow. If you take too much from it, you can cripple it’s ability to recover. Having said that, however, most of these woods appreciate a good pruning now and then. It will actually help them grow stronger, straighter and better. In fact, a healthy willow is SO vigorous, it may not even notice you’ve taken anything at all! They also play a large part in stopping local wildlife from damaging and eating your prize plants. Rabbits, mice, deer, and badgers all bring their own style of destruction to a garden. Their antics can result in disappointment, but can also be prevented. Once you’ve mapped out the general shape of your fence, get the chalk spray paint and measuring tape. Spray a spot on the ground every foot or so (as mentioned) so your posts are consistently spaced. Many people prefer to let the hurdles age naturally to beautiful grey, but treating them regularly with linseed oil diluted in turpentine or any other suitable “off-the-shelf" wood preserver will help to prolong their lifespan considerably. Assembly: The various sections are placed in the right position on a special brake and the heads are trapped firmly on to the rails. The braces are placed in position fixed with nails. The nail heads are flattened so that they lie completely flat against the gate hurdle. Once you have a good idea in mind of what exactly you would like to construct, and where, it is time to get started. Make sure that you have set aside enough time for the project. While it is a relatively easy project, it can be quite time consuming. Ideally, have some helpers on hand.
