About this deal

Sitting under 300m in height, Borrowdale’s Castle Crag features a famous cave, a war memorial and a spooky old quarry, which adds a sense of intrigue to the climb. And like many of the smaller Wainwrights, you are more than rewarded at the summit with views to savour in every direction. For the uninitiated, a Wainwright refers to one of 214 fells in the Lake District named after Alfred Wainwright, and hill bagging (also known as peak bagging and mountain bagging) refers to having climbed a particular hill, and the objective for some people is to climb as many as you can. Karen continues: "It's a good example of one of the fells that people probably wouldn't bother to go up if it wasn't a Wainwright. So it's great that it encourages people to get up something different." Wainwright Two: Blencathra (868m) Looking out over the Lake District from Sharp Edge, Blencathra. Photo: Getty

Behind the Scenes with Wainwright: A Publisher's Perspective of a Reluctant Celebrity by Andrew Nichol (2012) The next few are slightly bigger in altitude, but don’t let that put you off – they’re still great for beginners...If you choose this route, don’t forget to stop off at the hermit caves where adventurer Millican Dalton lived for many years. Wainwright was a fell walker and author of a seven-volume pictorial guide to the Lakeland Fells, published between 1955-1966, which became the definitive guidebooks to walking the Lake District Mountains and are still considered classics to this day. Each of the books describes each of the fells and the area which surrounds it, with plenty of helpful information and beautiful hand-drawn pictures. He has helped and inspired many walkers for the past forty years, and he was awarded an MBE for it. Wainwright, A (1964). A Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, Book 6: The North Western Fells. London: Frances Lincoln. ISBN 0-7112-2459-5.

Eric Robson, Chairman of the Wainwright Society, writes that when making a TV programme on Scafell Pike, he was asked to carry out a risk assessment. “Dangerous,” he wrote on the form. “If wet or windy, bloody dangerous.”In 1972 Wainwright devised the west–east Coast to Coast Walk, as an alternative to the north–south Pennine Way. The Coast to Coast, he declares in his guidebook, which follows the same format as the Pennine Way Companion, "puts the Pennine Way to shame" for scenic beauty, variety and interest. [14] The 190-mile (310-kilometre) route traverses the north of England from St. Bees to Robin Hood's Bay, passing through the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors national parks. For each fell, Wainwright includes the preferred routes to the summit, carefully detailing each step with his own idiosyncratic descriptions and hand-drawn maps. The guide has been updated twice since it was first published (mostly to take account of the changing conditions of the fells), but it remains pretty much as Wainwright himself wrote it. More than a half-century later, the guide remains a detailed love letter for the Lake District, its careful notations a marvel of precise observation. The Wainwright Bridge". In the popular walking town of Ambleside, Loughrigg Fell is short in stature, an altitude of only 335m, however, at the summit you can catch a great view of the surrounding fells. With various routes available, the walk can be made as easy or as hard as you want. It’s also manageable for beginners. A gentle stroll from Rosthwaite along the River Derwent will make for a good warm-up before visiting Lodore Falls Hotel for lunch or afternoon tea. 3. High Street
