About this deal

The UniFi family -- represented by the Dream Machine (UDM), UDM-Pro, the Dream Router (UDR), or UDM-SE... -- aims at business/pro/enterprise users. They are comprehensive consoles acting as the central controllers of various products, of which networking devices are only part of the picture. The Unifi Dream Machine (UDM for short) is a great choice for the heart of your home network. If you are building a DIY Smart Home or DIY CCTV system like me, you are probably interested in this flagship networking device from Unifi. Powered by UniFi OS, the UDM SE gives you full control of all your UniFi devices, including access points, Protect cameras, Talk phones, and Access readers. It's also a future-proof console since it will be able to run all upcoming UniFi OS applications. Engineered for end-to-end simplicity, the UDM SE features an integrated Bluetooth radio that streamlines the initial setup and configuration process, which can be completed in minutes with the UniFI Network application (web or mobile). Connect (currently in Early Access): A fully integrated "Enterprise of Things" hardware and software solution that works with UID to simplify IT management for organizations.

This really does make total sense as an addition that I could see becoming standard when the next version is released or certainly the ability to physically add the drive in after manufacturer if needed. It has POE! Powered by UniFi OS, the UDM SE gives you full control of all your UniFi devices, including access points, Protect cameras, Talk phones, and Access readers. It's also a future-proof console since it will be able to run all upcoming UniFi OS applications. The point is: a non-Wi-Fi router's relevancy is independent of Wi-Fi. And you can easily add Wi-Fi to it via an access point. Here's my UDM-SE being tested with the U6 Enterprise access point. The two work well together, but you need a Multi-Gig PoE switch to maximize the AP's performance. You can do virtually anything you'd want to do with the UDM-SE's ports or connected clients, and in comprehensive ways. And the console has everything you can think of regarding network, Wi-Fi, and mesh configurations. Both Pro and SE comes with dual WAN ports, but the difference is SE has 2.5GbE while Pro has 1 GbE. If you have a modem and internet service that is beyond 1Gbps, you could certainly see the benefit from this additional port. The quoted wireless specification is given as the maximum radio performance. Achievable range and throughput will vary depending on the regional regulations where the radio is deployed.

POE support - if you only need and will ever need 8 ports great - but as soon as start needing more ports and want to add a dedicated switch then for me your better off using the savings towards that dedicated separate switch to begin with. Run the same Unifi Applications (Network, Protect, Access, Talk) and one other but we'll ignore that. Also, perhaps this could be a great idea for another post from you where you can recommend the Unifi UPS and also which splitters and link it to your excellent PoE article which I just read as well. Also, would you recommend any specific splitters on the market? I’m always worried about buying something cheap that will fry my equipment at worst, or just degrade its life at best due to poor and ‘noisy’ power delivery. Using cryptography, the new protocol is slated to be extremely simple yet fast. WireGuard is still under development but has proven to be the most secure, easiest-to-use, and simplest VPN solution. Also, since the router has just one 10Gbps LAN port, I put it in a double-NAT to copy data from my 10Gbps-capable server via its other 10Gbps WAN port. This setup is also not ideal for performance. This article will compare and contrast the two more advanced models UDM-SE and the UDM-Pro, and help you decide which is best for your needs. As a network controller, the UDM-SE has everything the UDR has and much more. You can run multiple applications with the UDM-SE, of which the Network app is the default. Connect (newly added in early 2023): The support for new types of products, including UniFi screens and EV chargers.

This is great for small deployments where you might have limited access points and camera's and you don't need a second switch. The price LCM display (1) 1.3" touchscreen Bootup animation: bootup in progress Firmware upgrade icon: firmware upgrading In fact, coupling the UDM-SE with the U6 Enterprise and you'll get a better Wi-Fi solution than the Dream Wall with a couple of hundred US dollars to spare. (The console can manage any UniFi APs via the Network application.) Generally, all UniFi controllers share the same basic features and settings, but their capabilities vary depending on the hardware specs and port configurations. Wireguard is the latest VPN protocol. Debuted in 2016, initially only for Linux, but since 2020 has been available cross-platform (Windows, macOS, BSD, iOS, Android). Are you looking for the ultimate home networking solution? Look no further than the Unifi Dream Machine SE (UDM SE) and wireless access points. This powerful combination of hardware and software provides a comprehensive, secure, and reliable network for your home or small business. With the Unifi Dream Machine SE, you can easily set up a wireless network that covers your entire home or office. And with the addition of wireless access points, you can extend your coverage even further. Besides the built-in Wi-Fi, the Dream Wall is practically the UDM-SE with a wall-mounting design and a larger touchscreen.

The UDM line of products are essentially enterprise-level network appliances that combine the following functions into a single device: PoE ports are great for UniFi Protect camera and some of Access points; however, certain access points and switches require higher than regular PoE power supply e.g. U6-LR, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-HD etc. So if you plan to use these access points and still needing those level of PoE supply, you will need separate switch unit. At which point, PoE Ports on UDM Pro SE may no longer be relevant. First implemented in Windows 95 and has been part of the Windows operating systems and many other platforms since PPTP is well-supported and the easiest to use. For Wi-Fi, you will need to get a Wi-Fi Access Point (WAP) such as the Unifi 6 Liteor Unifi 6 Pro, both of which I use in my home. I also have a detailed comparison of the various Unifi WAPs. I’m also getting the U6 enterprise as I have a smart home and the 2.4Ghz network is getting congested (not sure if it will help as most smart sensors have very basic radios but let’s see).

Standard 48 PoE

The UDM-SE features PoE (802.3af) and PoE+ (802.3at). It doesn't support the latest PoE++ (802.3bt), required by some latest Multi-Gig access points. But there's no point in supporting PoE++ when the ports themselves are Gigabit. This is described as “for full UniFi OS Application experience” which is a clever way of saying not just for protect. So while I understand you can use it for video capture for one or two camera's that's not completely what it's there for and I'm not sure would actually be a good idea - just add a surveillance hard drive. The UDM is the first UniFi product that works well as a home router, thanks to its friendly design. In a way, it's a bridge between the two product lines. The UDR further solidifies that approach, making the UDM-Pro or UDM-SE applicable to demanding homes.
