About this deal

Well, first of all, this tasty vining moschata grows like nobody’s business. Developing multiple stems, it will ramp all over the place, especially on anything it can climb, like the garden fence (good) or your young apple trees (bad). And on those gargantuan vines it will grow literally dozens of giant fruits, many topping 5′ in length. No, we’re not exaggerating!

Details: Type Edible Crop Position Kitchen Garden Soil Broad Tolerance Height 60cm (24in) Group/Species pepo Common name Serpentine Squash Moisture Moist but Well-drained Aspect Full Sun Spread 1.8m (6ft) - Trailing Cultivation Soak/soften seed to speed up germination, then sow on their edge 2.5cm deep in individual pots. Once they have 5-6 leaves, harden off and plant out after the last frosts. Sow direct from mid-May. DescriptionFood Use: Tromboncinos can be cooked like summer squash when young or used like winter squash when mature.

Provide a strong trellis: Vines can easily reach 1.5m high and wide, often more, so make sure your trellis is strong enough. The flowers will decorate your gardenand encourage pollinators, while the fruit can hang down decoratively. Like many of its cucurbit cousins, tromboncino grows on a vigorous vine with large, slightly hairy, rounded green leaves. The vine produces separate male and female flowerswhich are large, yellow and trumpet-shaped. It’s drier and firmer than zucchini, though the pores near the skin do weep when you cut it, but I imagine if you wanted to make something akin to Tromboncino Parmesan or Fried Zucchini (dredging in flour and deep frying) it would probably be excellent for that since it is drier than its cousin who can sometimes get mushy. Now comes the exciting part—watching your tromboncinos sprout and grow! Tromboncino seeds typically germinate within 7 to 14 days, and it takes about 80 to 100 days from planting to harvest. When to Harvest TromboncinosTromboncino is my new favourite vegetable. I got my seed from Diggers and I think they will displace zucchini in my garden. They grow like a very rampant cucumber, and by using lots of vertical space they conserve my precious intensively fenced ground space. Your vines can be allowed to run free on the ground, or you can train them to climb on a trellis. But make sure it’s strong enough to support the weight of the fruit. The plants produce both male flowers and female flowers, so pollination is easy. The pre-adolescent fruit is located behind the female flowers. For a bumper crop. Tromboncino is super productive. You can often harvest 10 to 15 large fruit from each vine. Watering is another key factor that influences the success of your tromboncino crop. The soil should be consistently damp but notsoggy or bone dry. Monitor the leaves for any color changes or droopiness, which signal the need for adjustments in watering. Over- or under-watering can be detrimental to the plants, so it’s essential to keep a close eye on their needs and water accordingly. How Long Does it Take Tromboncinos to Germinate and Grow?

But wait, what have all these recipes to do with an animal feed crop? Not a thing, really, but we can’t help singing the praises of tromboncino in any application! How to Grow Tromboncino Squash Tromboncinoflowers are also edible and can be stuffed just like zucchini flowers, with rice and herbs, ricotta and lemon zest. The really nice thing about this variety is that all the seeds form in the bulbous part at the end, the way seeds all collect in the center of hard squash. That means you’ve got this whole long length of fruit with no seeds. In season: Mid-late summer through Fall – Earlier in the season, treat like a summer squash; later in the season, peel and treat like a winter squash.
