We’ll charm them. We’ll drink a little, dance a little. And then, come dawn, we’ll escape down the mountain. Zweeke the sorcerer said, "You ask me, my father, to tell you of the youth of Umslopogaas, who was named Bulalio the Slaughterer, and of his love for Nada, the most beautiful of Zulu women. Each one of those names was buried deep in me, like the names of living people.Throughout the book, Alexis conjures with the sheer sound of naming things: islands, mountains, rivers, trees, plants, birds. The book is written entirely in the first person, with very little dialogue, giving the rhapsodic effect of a waking dream, even amid the horrors of the Western Front: Description: It is the turn of the century on the island of Mauritius, and young Alexis L'Etang enjoys an idyllic existence with his parents and beloved sister: sampling the pleasures of privilege, exploring the constellations and tropical flora, and dreaming of treasure buried long ago by the legendary Unknown Corsair. But with his father's death, Alexis must leave his childhood paradise and enter the harsh world of privation and shame. Years later, Alexis has become obsessed with the idea of finding the Corsair's treasure and, through it, the lost magic and opulence of his youth. He abandons job and family, setting off on a quest that will take him from remote tropical islands to the hell of World War I, and from a love affair with the elusive Ouma to a momentous confrontation with the search that has consumed his life. By turns harsh and lyrical, pointed and nostalgic, The Prospector is a parable of the human condition (Le Mond) by one of the most significant literary figures in Europe today. anniversary of rail link (History of the Eastern Goldfields railway, officially completed on 1 January 1897, to the present, including introduction of the Prospector train on 29 November 1971) Kalgoorlie Miner 1 January 1997, p.2

The Bushes and the Berrys followed the masses to Yukon Territory during the Klondike Gold Rush. The families made millions off stolen land, and years later, one family member wants to share some of that wealth with those his ancestors neglected. But is it too late? And is that the right thing to do? The Prospectors follows the stories of the gold rush years and Anna and her grandfather trying to restore the scales that were long neglected. Based on the author's great grandmother's memoir this is a tale of danger, adventure and greed in Alaska's Yukon Territory. 1895 Yukon is no place for a woman let alone two but that is where Alice follows her sister after the family hits a major gold vein. Alice yearns to escape from home and is eager to find adventure but gets frustrated that her role is little more than housekeeper and companion to her fragile sister. When a major theft happens and the suspects, a native brother and sister, are not reported Alice takes matters into her own hands. She further asserts herself by marrying her brother in law bonding the two families twice over. With great wealth should come great responsibility but as we see in two generations this is not the case. A fascinating account of adventure, success at incredible odds, greed and who has rightful ownership of the land and its riches.

The Emerald Lodge was crushed by an avalanche two years earlier, killing the twenty-six men who were working there. This means that not only are they at the wrong lodge, but all their hosts and fellow guests are dead—ghosts of the workers who were killed two years ago. With the standard gauge line from Perth to Kalgoorlie due to open in mid-1969, the Western Australian Government Railways decided to replace The Kalgoorlie overnight sleeper service with a daylight service. The new service commenced on 29 November 1971, cutting the 653-kilometre (406mi) journey time from fourteen to eight hours. With an average speed of 85km/h (53mph), it was the fastest service in Australia. [1] [2] [3] [4] Stops [ edit ] Horrifying. I don't remember ever reading a book with the main character as despicable as Alice. While I knew the story was based on the author's own family history, I didn't realize until the end that Alice Bush's diary was the real inspiration for the novel and I wonder how much is fictionalized. Sounds adventurous, if self-centered, but Alexis is no Maqroll. He finds the Corsair's hiding places*, and he finds himself bewitched by the beautiful Ouma, a Manaf.

The women return to the party and pretend to be enjoying it. The narrator meets a boy named Lee and kisses him, saying “it felt no different from kissing a living mouth.” However, she is frightened when he calls her by real name, Jean, instead of Candy, the false name with which she generally introduces herself. Her legal name is Aubergine, which her parents gave her because they thought it sounded glamorous. When they discovered it was the French word for “eggplant,” they decided to call her Jean for short.Daniel Thomas, Art Gallery of New South Wales Quarterly, 'Tom Roberts', pg. 466-487, Sydney, Jul 1969, 472.
