About this deal

Most people use both terms and mean the same thing. But the difference between primer and spray paints is that “real” primers contain a solvent that creates a stronger bond with the surface of the miniature and thus provides better adhesion and higher resistance. Spray paints do not contain solvent, or less of it. Using a piece of foam I sponged on some Stormhost Silver . I only did this on areas that would make sense for wear and tear, such as hard edges. This gives a nice worn look in a random pattern. Use this sparingly. I applied all of these paints with a bit of foam – sponging it on roughly. The name of the game here is blending – using successive layers sparingly to even out a rusted and worn appearance. After that, it was Stormhost Silver and Contrast Flesh Tearers Red on the weapon, Contrast Ultramarines Blue& Contrast Apothecary White on the robes. I also broke out my favorite new paint, Tesseract Glow, and added it to the recesses on the weapon and crystal. Here I practically flooded the indents on the weapon and once it dried I ended up with this lovely effect. Overall, I think that these are some really solid technical paints. They won't magically make all the gems perfect with a single application, but with a bit a finesse and extra work it gives a nice effect that is different from the standard way of painting gems.

White Scar: a bright white color that can be used to add highlights and contrast to the overall color scheme. Lastly, it’s time to highlight all the metals. This is the longest part of the process, but the one that makes all those details pop and brings the scheme together. I went with Stormhost Silver, as I wanted to maximize the contrast and definition of these models. Normally I’d do some weathering too, but these models are already so busy that adding scratches and such just seems like it would be too much. Tyranids are a purely organic faction, which means that even within a fixed colour scheme there’s room for individual variation and mutation. This is great news if, like me, you have trouble figuring out the right recipe for the colour you want – you can experiment on different models and units until you’re happy, and the results won’t look odd at all! With that, you should be ready to hit the field with your high fantasy Spartan-adjacent stormzaddies. As for the animals, mounts, and other attendant critters, I usually go for naturalistic schemes drawn from wildlife. I can’t say I’ve really written these down since I didn’t standardize them, but browns and tans will get you where you need to go. I’m real excited to get to grips with the dragons soon and paint them up like Stellagama or Ground Agama lizards.

The three lightest silvers (Aluminium, Chrome and Sliver) are all the same as far as I can tell. I bought and used all three, and I just cannot see any difference. Both of these methods use the same end process of oil washes to achieve their rusted, grimy finish. More time is spent in spraying and prep than in sit-at-your desk painting time. Like all my terrain, it’s a low effort, high reward effect.

If you don’t have a wet palette or just don’t feel like blending up highlights on your rank and files, you could just get away with the base color, recess wash, and Evil Sunz Scarlet and Wild Rider Red highlights. Plumes also are often pretty small so you could just take that same edge highlight approach on them. The scratches are also optional, I just wanted to tie in the worn, beaten look. Step 6: Once dry, paint a mix of Burnt Sienna and Raw Umber oil paint over the barricade. Once covered, wipe off the majority of the paint with a paper towel. Try to wipe from top to bottom to get a weathered, dragged effluent, dripping grime/rust feel. Step 5: Once dry, run the barricade under hot water and use a stiff toothbrush to wash the salt off, repealing the ruddy primer underneath. Last but not least, Fairy Dust can be used on its own, for example for pearl white Lumineth armour, but it will require quite a few coats for solid coverage, so I recommend switching to an airbrush for a more even finish. Value Gold is very popular, so go with a gold recipe that you like the look of because you’ll be painting a lot of it.
