After being initially smitten by the new Seiko 5 Sport, I went through a brief period where I felt conflicted: How could I lust after a watch that seemed so simple, and worse yet, already had legions of lookalikes? If it weren’t clear, I like the change—I love the change. I think it ties the case together: look at how the polished tops of the crown guards finally have a friend to play with, instead of some itinerant, everchanging rotation of numbers that always seem a little off. Despite the association with injury risk, TL monitoring and ACWR currently appear to be poor predictors of injury [ 2, 16]. This poor predictive power in regard to future injury has led some practitioners to question the use of TL monitoring. However, it is important to understand that the ability of single variables to predict injuries will be limited considering the multitude of factors that may influence injury risk, including genetics [ 17], previous injury history [ 18], psycho-social stress [ 19– 21], different psychological coping strategies [ 22], and even coaching style [ 23]. Additionally, the use of inconsistent injury reporting methods (e.g., “medical attention injuries” versus “match time loss only”) and the small number of injuries typically seen in many studies makes it difficult to compare results between studies [ 6, 24]. One solution to this issue is to adopt a universal injury categorization tool like the Subsequent Injury Classification Model 2.0 [ 25]. Similar to TL-I, there are limitations in the ability of single metrics to estimate performance with precision. Many factors including nutritional status [ 26], percentage of training affected by injury [ 27, 28], and coaching style [ 29, 30] affect training adaptations and subsequent performance. Notwithstanding these limitations, TL monitoring is still considered an important part of the athlete monitoring process [ 1, 3]. To improve this process, a multi-factorial approach that considers an athlete’s daily readiness to train and informal variables like sports coaches’ experience and understanding of athletes is recommended to enhance the understanding of TL-I and TL-P [ 31, 32].

In fact, the accuracy of Seiko has led to the brand being the official timekeepers for various professional sports events.While the new Seikos are available on bracelet or a NATO strap, the SRPE51 comes with the former. The bracelet on the whole is quite jangly, unaided by hollow endlinks that don’t fit the watch perfectly. On the plus side, the sizing links are secured with simple split pins, making adjustments a snap. At the end of the day, I don’t need that much out of a bracelet, other than to size well and stay closed. This does both. And if you need more, I’m sure the aftermarket hordes will come out with some sturdier alternatives. The lug-to-lug distance is comparable to the SKX/5KX at 44mm. Even though that dimension hasn’t changed much, the wearer wouldn’t notice too much of a difference because the SKX/5KX case had a relatively short lug-to-lug to begin with. The crown guards have been carried over and have always been one of my favorite things about the SKX case. The bottom crown guard has a little swoop to it that adds some flair. That said, everything else in the Seiko 5 Sports collection is incompatible. You can still swap out the hands, dial and movement with mod parts made for the SKX007 but aside from that, nothing else. That is why we are releasing SRPE mod parts that are in their own separate category from the SKX/SRPD parts. The movement has a specified accuracy of +45 / -35 seconds per day. This is not too bad, but owners have reported a much better accuracy in practice. In addition, if you want even better accuracy, it is possible to have a watchmaker regulate it. Seiko is a business. It’s actually, like… a really BIG business. Thus, it makes sense that Seiko makes big-business decisions. At the end of the day, big-business decisions consider only the bottom line. Although the game is sometimes long, and sometimes short, it’s always played to increase the figure at the bottom. So, when Seiko announced that it was (finally) discontinuing the beloved SKX, it should not have surprised anyone that it would do something to fill the void. It’s our fault, not Seiko’s, that we fully expected Seiko to replace the SKX with yet another Cinderella loss-leader.

For the SRPD and SRPE watches though, they have so many variants that they had to separate them into 5 other categories: Sports, Suits, Specialist, Street and Sense. Let’s just get the specs out of the way, since they’re pretty much perfect: After spending some time with this watch, I concluded that if Seiko were going relaunch the Seiko 5 line, they should have started with this watch and not the 5KX. This watch makes so much more sense in the Seiko 5 line than the 5KX. Not that the 5KX doesn’t belong in the Seiko 5 line; Seiko has always included dive-style watches in the 5 line. It doesn’t make sense to start with the 5KX. This is generally a very simple procedure. We can do this for you, or you can get the watch adjusted locally. Option 1. However, watches fitted with metal bracelets often need adjusting to get the perfect fit. The stainless steel case is solidly built, with a mixture of brushed and polished surfaces that add interest and depth.
