About this deal

The sound on the SRH-440 is very balanced and neutral if a little boring. It feels almost cold. However one should remember here that the SRH-440 is designed primarily as a monitor headphone and these are traits that are preferred in music production with no one sound spectrum dominating the other.

The issue, if there is one, is that the range above about 1khz is elevated compared to the bass and lower midrange. This is particularly noticeable on vocals, where singers often sound a bit light or thin. This discontinuity isn’t very big, so the results remain musically involving, but this isn’t the most neutral headphone you can buy. Interestingly, neutral tonal balance is a strength of the SRH840, so give Shure a gold star for market segmentation. Common to both sets is the broad mid-range performance, expressing excellent vocal intelligibility and fine treble detail. This presentation is unforced though so, rather than pushing out a torrent of explicit in-your-face treble detail, they produce a hear-through quality, inviting you to look deep within your mix. In fact, the 440 easily made my best studio headphones for mixing, mastering, and music production list and still remains a top recommendation in that category even despite some of the issues we discussed earlier. All in all, the SRH440 is vastly inferior in this regard to close competitors like the MDR-7506 for example, which utilizes metal for the headband rather than a cheap-feeling plastic. ComfortSurprisingly competent for a decades-old set. Midrange is a little uneven but beats out many other modern TOTLs. The large, soft earpads and adjustable headband mean you can get hours of extended use while comfortably wearing the SRH440 headphones and their collapsible design means they’re well suited for portability – they even come with a carry pouch for extra protection.

It feels crisp, open, and clear, with very good separation and a pretty decent Soundstage for a closed headphone IMO. I really enjoy the extension these provide, but as metal also said, it’s not quite as clean sounding as something like an HD600’s low-end response around the sub-bass regions. As far as to even sound across the spectrum, the 440s are a solid option at this price point and definitely worth a look. Final Word

The bass has a bit more extension than a 7506 and hits a bit harder but still isn’t bass- heavy. It’s also not bass-light. It kind of sits in the middle. The padded headband and ear cups of the SRH440 provide comfort suitable for hours of uninterrupted use._

I think the 440 is runner-up simply due to its build and comfort, but honestly, this could just be a case of flipping a coin. First off, the headphones are all plastic (save for the bit of metal on the outside of the ear cups) but the overall construction feels a bit cheap, flimsy, and creaky. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. The mid-range can sound a bit forward with certain recordings, but I think it mostly knows its place in the mix.The Shure SRH840 is more expensive, and offers a more linear and extended sound, especially in the bass and lower midrange. The headband is quite "cushy" and forms rather nicely to the head. But sometims, when wearing them for a long time, the top of my head begins to get sore where it rests upon my head. This was one of my sister’s main concerns when I asked for her impressions over the last few years. Personally, I love the design of the Shure SRH-440's they are not designed in any way to be fashion headphones. Rather the 440s are designed for their purpose and that is as a studio or home monitor. There is nothing too flashy about them, more so they are quite utilitarian in the looks department but one thing you do notice right away is they look classy.
