Bluetooth is like a short-range, low-powered, low-bandwidth version of wi-fi used to connect compatible devices together rather than to the internet. Its box shape does leave us scratching our heads a bit though. You can’t balance your television on top of it (like the Sonos Playbase) and you can’t have it sit right in front of your TV (like pretty much any soundbar). While this will depend on the kit you are using and your wi-fi limitations at home, transmitting audio over wi-fi rather than Bluetooth comes with certain benefits: wi-fi doesn't have as limited a signal range as Bluetooth, generally facilitates better sound quality and is capable of transmitting higher-quality audio (Bluetooth is not widely capable of transmitting CD-quality or above music). What this all translates into is vastly improved sound, and while the Sonos One was mono only, the Era 100 distinguishes itself by providing a superb stereo experience. The bass is deeper and fuller, there's more clarity and detail throughout and even at higher volume, timing is excellent and the tonal balance is wonderfully even. It's predominantly a stationary, use-at-home type of product, but the Era 100's Bluetooth connectivity gives it more flexibility in use and makes it eligible for a spot on this list. Inside, there are three Class D amplifiers at 72W with two 10-inch 96dB woofers and a 1-inch 104dB compression driver tweeter. The frequency range is 40Hz-20Hz, including a bass-enhanced sound profile and Advanced Bass DSP. The IP65 rating allows it to withstand most weather conditions you would put it in, like bright sunlight, moist evenings or even a drizzle of rain.
Despite social distancing and other restrictions, the speaker was a hit for most who saw it. Because it’s loud, it already attracts attention, and if you can avoid annoying people from the start, you might be able to attract a crowd and meet new people. What really made the difference was using the Bass+ and Power settings. The rumbling bass felt like being in a club or concert in closer proximity, and was the part that really carried the sound further distances. At the default sound setting without bass boost or spatial audio engaged, I wasn't exactly wowed with sound quality (the bass is a bit underwhelming, the mids are recessed and there's a bit too much treble push). But as soon as you engage the bass boost and spatial audio, everything sounds more balanced and full. You can also tweak the sound profile further in the Soundcore companion app for iOS and Android. There are some other caveats here, as well. Although good, the bass isn’t quite as deep as you’ll get from a dedicated subwoofer. Devialet says it goes all the way down to 35Hz, which is plenty enough to deliver onscreen explosions with scale and power, but when it comes to really deep bass throb and rumble it struggles to produce a musical low-down thump. The aforementioned Samsung HW-K850, for example, is far better at reproducing the full audio range but then, for Sky customers at least, it’s considerably pricier.There’s no equalizer in the app, and some fine print within it suggests not using one to begin with. You’re certainly free to do so from whichever source you’re playing music from, assuming they offer it, as most music streaming services don’t. The good news is that the New Soundboks sounds great — even better than we expected at louder volumes. Some distortion sets in at 10 and 11, which is to be expected, but we would only go that far if we were outside in more open areas. There are six 7.5cm woofers (two at the front, two firing from each side) and three 5cm full-range drivers. However, if you've got a big, spacious room that you want to fill with sound at decent volumes, a bigger speaker with a higher watt output will likely serve you best. How does a Bluetooth speaker work? When choosing a Bluetooth speaker, what it really comes down to is size and price. If you're looking for a very portable speaker, you'll want to get something very compact, but remember that smaller speakers usually produce less sound and bass than larger ones. So while there are plenty of mini Bluetooth speakers that deliver bigger sound than you might expect, they do have their sonic limitations. For a lot of people it's a question of finding a speaker that's not too big or too small -- one that travels well but also is capable of producing good sound for its size.
