About this deal

The Interstellar Slayer by Scott Baron is a short first book in a 5 book series called Space Assassins, that follows, Hozark, a man who is one of the finest assassins the galaxy has known. Equipped with a deadly Exitus rifle and with the ability to target Characters hiding behind their own front lines, they’re peerless sharpshooters who are especially good at removing supporting units like Haemonculi , Cadre Fireblades , and even renegade Apothecaries . It is a real shame because I loved the world Scott Baron created but this is a really basic thing to get right when writing a story. Speaking of protagonists, I did not feel like some parts of the story were being told through the perspective of any particular character.

There's a huge world of wich we only see a fraction but we follow Hozark, an assassin, and one of the deadliest of them all!! We create some empathy with him, even knowing him to be fearless and emotionless (on purpose)!! The main character is deeper than the rest of them, but being such a short book I didn't expect a lot of character development outside the main ones!! The author has fleshed out the plotline quite well while still keeping enough secrets that you can't actually figure out where it is going. Just the fact that it is going, at a good pace, and well written at that, keeps the reader engaged. There are also excellent descriptions along with the author's good imagination of many different planets and the life forms that exist on them. Scott Baron has the ability to create new and exciting worlds, people, and situations that feel different from others I have ever listened to. He is a visual writer and I’m a visual learner, so I find his books very entertaining and engaging. The characters are often complex and purposeful, and many are likable as well. If you enjoyed the banter from his previous stories, there is plenty in this book as well. There are a few characters one might expect from the other series making an appearance in this series as well. The listener will also learn more about the special waters Charlie first discovered during his crash landing in this new world from “The Dragon Mage” series. We also are given a better view in into the secretive Council of 20 referenced previously as well. The author is able to blend both technology and fantasy, yet this initial book is more fantasy focused even with space travel being accomplished using spacecraft, etc. Given the number of books the author has written and published, I was expecting a polished and well honed plot, and well developed characters. Conversations flow smoothly, the way characters in the book talk are consistent for their characters but there is something missing. Conversations are stale at some points where only said what needs to be saidIn the early years of the 41st Millennium, it was discovered that the Orks of the Roxanzand sector were rallying behind a powerful Warboss called Urgak the Unstoppable, who had set about gathering together Boyz and war machines from a vast area. Worse still, their Meks had begun construction of a colossal Gargant, which the Imperium couldn’t afford to ignore. Same was true with the world building. As I mentioned before, I found it to be really good, but at the same it was written in an info-dump-y way and there was quite a lot of it. Despite this, I have to say, coming as a surprise to me, it was very easy get through them.

In Book 2, the crew set out on a new mission (I don’t want to give away spoilers), Hozark again is the main character, but he is joined by Bud, and Laskar, and due to their mission, Demelza also continues to be a part of their party. There was far more at play than was apparent on the surface and Hozark would require all of his wits and skill to get to the bottom of it. And he most surely intended to do just that, no matter how high the body count. He just hoped to do so before more of his kin fell victim to the nefarious plot. This book kind of follows under it. There is this balance, we have the start where stuff doesn’t go as planned and there are some chapters of Hozark when he was young and just started training, which I did like to read about. He sure is an interesting character, does what he needs to do, ha some inner conflicts, and an angsty past which is always a plus for me. When a Wampeh Ghalian uses their special ability, and feeds upon someone with Magic, drinking their blood, they take this magic, and they can pass it to the sword, imbuing the sword with power.

First of all, thank you BookSirens and Scott Baron for the opportunity to read and review this work!! The characters were one dimensional, and attempts at humourous interplay and comic side comments fell flat, or were distinctly high school cafeteria level.A sister Ghalian. Of course you do.” “I will retrieve them and be aboard in five minutes.” Hozark nodded. “Very well. Once we are safely aboard our mothership, I will introduce you to Bud and his new copilot. And then we begin our deadly work in earnest.” It was a heavy blow to the T’au Empire. They were so concerned with the fallout of their spiritual leader’s death that he was swiftly and secretly replaced by holographic AI facsimiles, encoded with Aun’Va’s thought patterns to hide the truth from T’au society. 2. Execution Force Regnum Tribunal The infuriating amount of repetition suggests that this series might have been serialised originally and the constant reminders of…well, everything… might have worked in that context where it was a week or month between chapters. But as an audiobook where you just roll through the chapters it was really irritating. There is so much mystery, intrigue, captivating story lines as pieces on the board are moved around in this incredibly complex game on both sides. We see this all from Hozark’s point of view, as he looks on at what is occurring between not only the Wampeh Ghalian’s, but all the other different people in the Sector, and the Council of Twenty, and all of their interests.
