Flash forward to the future. I am having dinner in a five-star hotel to say goodbye to one of my dearest clients, and my friend. The first in Hong Kong I considered a friend.
I have the pleasure of working with three charities in my current employment: the Lifelong Animal Protection (LAP), Hong Kong Dog Rescue (HKDR) and Kirsten’s Zoo. Some of the most inspirational women I’ve met head these organisations. They’re all a bit different, but they all share kind hearts, steely resolve and a rather indomitable spirit. I am always a little in awe of all of them. Sheila McLelland of LAP is probably the most mild-mannered and always sets me at ease. Shadow falls into a hole, and appears to be too injured to continue. However, Chance jumps down in an attempt to tell Shadow that he can do it. It appears as if Shadow is ready to give up, but Chance utterly refuses to let Shadow quit, even telling Shadow that he loves him. The animals had no idea what was going on — more than once, it's shown they don't understand human speech or some human actions, such as the phone to the ear — and so of course wouldn't understand why they'd been left in this strange place while their people drove off without them. Sassy also gets a heroic cat moment when she engineers a plan to get everyone out of the animal shelter. He somehow manages to get home anyway. I can’t save every pet. But I can appreciate the care, the bravery and the empathy of their loving owners and rescuers. What I have found while treating animals is that humans care, humans feel and humans love. I am no Genevan philosopher. Unlike Rousseau, I didn’t always believe in the natural goodness of people. And so my unexpected appreciation for humanity is perhaps the thing that makes me happiest about being a vet.
3. "Are you talking to ME?"
Heroic BSoD: Shadow and Chance, at the same time, after they fail to stop Sassy from plummeting over the waterfall, thinking she's dead. Shadow downplays this. He's far from stupid, but he can't seem to understand that Peter and the other humans aren't leaving them for good when the family leaves. The voice acting for the animals is brilliant and very well done especially considering it's human voices for animals the scenery is absolutely stunning the animals who star in the movie are some of the most well trained animals ever put to film and you can really see that the people who made the movie really cared for these animals and treated them all with love and respect it's heart-warming. That Poor Cat: Invoked when Kate accidentally stepped on Sassy's tail during the chaotic attempt at feeding Chance.
The Door Slams You: Shadow "rescues" Chance from the pound this way by pouncing the fence right in front of the pound personnel. Established by nature enthusiast and snake catcher for the Hong Kong Police William Sargent, Hong Kong Snake Safaris takes small groups on night safari hikes (kids over 8 years old are welcome!) to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. It organises public and private snake safaries as well as special excursions to the remote uninhabited islands. Ungrateful Bastard: The animals think of the humans who sent them to the pound as this after they had helped rescue a little girl lost in the woods. It's unfortunate because the humans were extremely grateful for their help, and only sent them to the pound so they could both treat Chance for his injuries and to have a safe spot for their owners to come collect them.It is very obvious why this film was bound to be a hit with children: Almost all children love animals, the humor is at a level that even young ones can laugh at, and the three protagonists are ones that all children can identify with: the aged Golden Retriever Shadow, the frisky pup Chance, and the sharp-tongued and witty cat Sassy. PREFERRED HABITAT: Warm fresh or salt water, preferably free of the plastic offal of a decaying human civilization. Hero Antagonist: The workers at the pound. They have nothing but the best interests of the animals at heart, and are only holding them there until their owners come get them. Also, doctors pull the porcupine spines out of Chance's face because he needs them removed, even if it hurts. Unfortunately, the animals grossly misinterpret what's happening, and cause even more trouble for themselves as a result. Inevitable Waterfall: Sassy goes over one, despite Shadow's efforts to save her. She survives thanks to being found by a nature watcher, but Chance and Shadow legitimately think that she's dead. Possibly the most stereotypically stoner-y of personality types, the ISFP is mega chill. This doesn't mean ISFPs don't care deeply about who's going to win the 2016 election, it just means that they don't feel compelled to fight about which candidate they support or why they support them. ISFP's are lovely friends to have, too, because they're very considerate, peaceful, and easy to be around. ISFP personality types don't rush the present or dwell on the future, preferring to take life one moment at a time. 7. ESFJ: Horse
