About this deal

I wish we had more of Riverstar being a reluctant leader, the book implied it was going that way but never commited. I wish he told cats to keep calling him River Ripple instead of Riverstar, eventually warming up to the name by the end of the book, and I wished he tried to skip gathering like it was said he did in an earlier book (I forget which one) Parental Substitute: Riverstar explains that he didn't remember his parents and was simply found as a kit near the park entrance, and that Arc had raised him. Clear Sky becomes mates with Star Flower after having previously fathered Thunder with another she-cat. (As we see in the other Dawn of the Clans books, Star Flower is actually his third love, after Bright Stream and then Thunder's mother Storm died.) River Ripple feels jealous that Clear Sky gets to start a second family when he never got to have kits with Flutter.

He's earned it. With this life, I give you unity, so that RiverClan may never be divided. Slash is the worst Warriors villain and I hate that he was in this book, much less the main problem for the last third. Kind of girlboss of Finch to kill him though. River Ripple begins to encounter the mountain cats a bit more: a she-cat named Dappled Pelt helps when Night is injured, and River Ripple helps the cats escape a forest fire. One night he awakens to see spirit cats, who lead him to The Four Trees, where the mountain cats are fighting. He watches in horror, seeing them die, but the spirits tell him to wait: after the fight, he can be a bridge to peace. After the battle concludes, the spirits tell everyone that they must "unite or die". River Ripple accepts that he has a "group" just as much as the others, and does his best to try to be a leader. In Secrets of the Clans, a 2007 field guide, River is the founder and the first leader of RiverClan, working with Thunder, Wind, and Shadow to develop the warrior code. He is the cat who created a mentoring program for training the apprentices. He is known to be generous and warm-hearted with his own Clan, but not interested in the other Clans' troubles, even skipping Gatherings when possible. [42] Most of the rogues who have joined the forest groups have given themselves two-word names to put their pasts behind them and fit in better with the group. River Ripple's cats Dawn, Moss, Pine, and Kite have chosen the names Dawn Mist, Moss Tail, Pine Needle, and Kite Wing. Ripple doesn't feel like the same cat after his journey down the river, so he renames himself River Ripple for the river that brought him there. The following morning, they say farewell, and Riverstar and Drizzle set off… and then Finch wades into the river: she's changed her mind. The river's still a bit swollen, but they ride on the raft almost to the forest. They come upon some rapids upstream of the falls, however, which destroys the raft and nearly kills Drizzle. They know they have to go on foot from there, but at least they're close to the forest. Action Prologue: The prologue starts with the park getting destroyed by Twoleg monsters; Ripple tries to flee and falls into the river.

You were our stepping stone. But you will be so much more. With this life, I give you a wise, nurturing heart so that you may support and encourage your Clan and, one day, your kits.Riverstar’s personality is a complex one, at that. He, in my opinion, was more suited to be a medicine cat than a leader. He knew about StarClan, so why not use that as a medicine cat advantage? Well, that’s for another post. So, he knew about the “spirit cats” and helped the other leaders understand them more. He seemed not to be partial or impartial to any of the groups, which I find odd. I also wonder why the authors chose to rehash certain events in Dawn of Clans and not others. But mostly I wish that they spent less time reviewing what we as readers already know. This insistence on seemingly random recaps results in frustrating inconsistencies: scenes where River Ripple should know about Turtle Tail's death—because he had been present when her body was found—but only mentions it casually, like someone who had heard about it secondhand; moments where he meets certain mountain cats before they were made aware of him in the main series; and narration that recontextualizes his actions in the main series and makes it less interesting (in my opinion). As Sunnyfall so neatly points out in her YouTube video about this super edition, once we're in River Ripple's head, he's another cat entirely. We learn that he is incapable of making his own decisions, and his defining character traits in the series are reduced to, "StarClan/Gray Wing/Night told me to do this." Riverstar had a lot of interesting qualities that separated him from the “mountain cats” but he lost pretty much all of them in the second half of the book and became just like all the other leaders. I'm glad that Night is not a romantic interest. It feels so rare to see such a well developed platonic friendship in these books. Prequel: Dawn of the Clans and its supplemental books take place long before the main series or any of the other prequels.

When a storm-tossed river sweeps Ripple away from the park he’s always known, he commits himself to the life of a peaceful loner. Still, as his new island home starts to become a sanctuary for other rogues, he can’t help but feel responsible for their safety, and for the community—and Clan—they are beginning to build. But when an old friend from the park resurfaces with terrible news just as the forest cats’ fights begin to escalate into bloodshed, the cat now known as Riverstar will have to decide which home he is truly committed to protecting: his new Clan or his old family.
