About this deal

Port Trunking cannot break the speed limit of a single Ethernet device, but it offers a sufficient amount of bandwidth for multiple users connecting at the same time. For example, if two 1Gb NICs are used for Port Trunking, the aggregated network bandwidth will be increased to 2Gb, but the network speed will remain 1Gb. Port Trunking, also known as LACP (Link Aggregation Control Protocol), allows you to combine multiple LAN interfaces for increased bandwidth and load balancing for multiple clients. It also provides failover capabilities to maintain network connectivity if a network port fails. We like having 10GbE uplinks, either 10Gbase-T or SFP+ on these 2.5GbE switches since that makes a lot of sense. If you are looking for a 10Gbase-T capable 2.5GbE switch, this is going to take over our top recommendation spot in our Ultimate Cheap Fanless 2.5GbE Switch Mega Round-Up guide. Where to Buy i also have a bunch of other devices that are limited to 1gbe, so i could use my existing 1gbe switch for those, but add something like this QSW-2104-2T for the 2.5gbe devices that are now becoming standard, but still have an option for 10gbe (e.g. the main nas, desktop). Despite its growing popularity among hardware manufacturers, 2.5G technology is often overlooked. This is unfortunate, as it is becoming more common in computers and motherboards and is a cost-effective way to upgrade to multi-gigabit speeds. For example, 2.5G cards and dongles are reasonably priced, and 2.5Gbps speeds can be achieved with existing Cat5e cabling. TRENDnet has released an affordable unmanaged 2.5G switch, called the TEG-S380, which is an 8-port Unmanaged 2.5G Switch and part of the brand’s Multi-Gigabit Networking Solutions family. With that said, they’re not necessary in a lot of cases, so for many, they’ll be a “nice to have” more than a necessity. Choose from various QNAP NAS that support 2.5GbE or 10GbE connectivity to meet your demands for higher speeds! The front of the switch is very similar to the QSW-2104-2S-A, except the 2 SFP+ ports are now RJ45. Ports 1-2 are 10GbE and ports 3-6 are 2.5GbE. The DC input and status lights are on the front panel. QNAP QSW 2104 2T A 4x 2.5GbE 2x 10Gbase T Switch Front In terms of the overall 2.5GbE performance, we were able to get fairly normal 2.5GbE speeds from each of the four ports and decent 10GbE speeds as well. QNAP QSW 2104 2T A Performance Also, we did not find PoE capabilities when testing this switch. QNAP QSW-2104-2T-A Power Consumption

i doubt the switches i mentioned have poe, so unless your setup has plans to be poe powering up devices, then shouldn't be an issue. i use some poe switches, to power up things like unifi ap lite, very useful but they come at a premium for the added feature but it's worth it if you have many poe capable devices. Note: If the distance between the switch and the device is less than 45 meters (148 feet), a Cat 6 cable can be used to achieve 10Gb/s speeds. QSW-2104-2T: 6 ports, including 2x 10 GbE RJ45 ports (10G/5G/2.5G/1G/100M) and 4x 2.5GbE RJ45 ports (2.5G/1G/100M) QNAP reserves the right to replace partial parts or accessories if the original is no longer available from its manufacturer/supplier. Any replacement would be fully tested and verified to meet strict compatibility and stability guidelines and will deliver identical performance to the original.arrives in both Copper and Fibre, which is useful for diverse setups, but leads to a coin toss of more expensive 10G Copper base hardware vs 10G Fibre cables/transceiver high price point and complexity. 2.5GbE uses all the same hardware in place as traditional 1GbE and allows for improved sustainability and less waste QTS Note: Use only QNAP memory modules to maintain system performance and stability. For NAS devices with more than one memory slot, use QNAP modules with identical specifications.

Overall, this was one of the lower-power solutions even without the 10GbE ports so it was very impressive. Although the switches are otherwise virtually identical, this switch used ~0.3-0.4W lower power at each test point than the TRENDnet TEG-S762. It may also just be that QNAP is using a different 12W power adapter for the switch and is getting better power efficiency as a result. Final Words Sound Level Test Environment: Refer to ISO 7779; Maximum HDD loaded; Bystander Position; Average data from 1 meter in front of operating NAS. The QSW-2104-2T features 10GbE and 2.5GbE RJ45 ports for connecting various bandwidth-demanding devices, and supports the NBASE-T™ standard for connection using Cat 5e or Cat 6a cabling. With the QSW-2104-2T, you can easily create a hybrid high-speed network in homes and offices to accelerate file transfer, virtual machine applications, multimedia streaming/sharing, and more.

Overview:

At idle, we saw 4.0W which is very good for this class of switches. It would be good for a 4-port or 5-port 2.5GbE switch alone, but there are also 10GbE ports making this a higher-bandwidth switch. QNAP QSW 2104 2T A 4x 2.5GbE 2x 10Gbase T Switch 4.0W Idle Power Dynamic Link Aggregation) is the No.5 mode according to the IEEE 802.3ad specification. It uses a complex algorithm to aggregate adapters by speed and duplex settings to provide load balancing and fault tolerance but requires a switch that supports IEEE 802.3ad with LACP mode properly configured. The addition of two 10GbE ports is important since it increases the bandwidth of the switch significantly. We actually got slightly better performance on the SFP+ versus the 10Gbase-T links on this unit comparing QNAP to QNAP. The 2.5GbE ports were about the same. If you want better performance, and the ability to use fiber, the QNAP QSW-2104-2S-A with two SFP+ ports is probably better. If you have 10Gbase-T clients and want something easy, this is fairly close. QNAP QSW-2104-2T-A PoE and Management Capabilities Plugging in a port at 2.5GbE speeds was only 0.4W of additional power consumption. That was similar to the TRENDnet TEG-S762 but with a lower base idle power consumption. QNAP QSW 2104 2T A 4x 2.5GbE 2x 10Gbase T Switch 4.4W 1×2.5GbE NICs are also being built into modern routers, access points, and just about everything in between, so this is now a natural progression for users who always had 1GbE. With that said, to utilize these enhanced speeds, your networking must support it as well.

Managed Switches (like the UniFi Controller) will allow you to configure additional features, while Unmanaged Switches are plug-and-play (with no fancy features). Since we are going to be doing this as part of a series, we will note that this is an unmanaged switch.Warning: Using unsupported modules may degrade performance, cause errors, or prevent the operating system from starting. the 10gbe cost about slightly more than triple that. and thats not counting the more expensive 10gbe switch Although 10GbE switches and routers ARE in the market at a better price than ever, they are still 3-4x the price of 1GbE alternatives in the managed or unmanaged form As mentioned above, these are my personal favorites in terms of the best 2.5Gb Switches that I think you can use based on certain tests run on each device. Keep in mind that outside of the port-specific changes on the Switch, a lot of this can be done with a Layer-3 Switch that’s the “primary” Switch, or even at the firewall level (using something like pfSense).
