About this deal

The vibrant colours and distinctive lobed shape of their leaves make Maple trees a great addition to any garden or planting scheme. They can be trees or shrubs and come in a variety of shapes including upright, spreading, mound forming and round. The smaller varieties of Japanese Maple are ideal for any sized garden, with many being suitable for growing in a pot. For those with larger gardens, Norway and Red Maples create a stunning feature. Maple trees are all deciduous but if you want winter interest, choose Coral Bark or Snake Bark Maples for their colourful or patterned bark.

Choose a straight edged pot rather than a rounded bulbous one as these are easier to remove if the roots have expanded. Japanese Maples have a reputation for being hard to grow, but this is largely undeserved. Getting the location right is key but they are not susceptible to pests and diseases and with some basic care they will thrive.Secondly, these trees are very slow growing. They take years to reach their full height and they won’t overpower any space.

These plants can grow up to five feet with arching branches that will offer shade while also framing your landscape perfectly. It is very bushy with wonderful bronze leaves. This tree will arrive at your door as an already established plant in a 5-litre pot. Overwatering can cause this problem also, but a well draining soil will help to move the water away from the roots. Finish by watering generously around the base. The tree planting guide has further information and videos. Watering & Aftercare Advice For Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' TreesAcer palmatum 'Asahi Zuru' - a beautifully variegated semi-dwarf tree producing a combination of pink and white to deep green leaves (may be entirely white or pink depending on growing conditions). Acer palmatum dissectum 'Crimson Princess' - a deciduous Acer has an upright weeping habit, creating a mushroom like display. Finely cut, fabulous deep purple-red leaves emerge from red buds turning bronze in the summer, followed by brilliant crimson-scarlet in autumn. If your Japanese Maple doesn't seem to be succeeding after a couple of years, don't be afraid to dig it up and try moving it somewhere else. Location is probably the most important factor in the success of your tree, so don't be afraid of a bit of trial and error. The best time to move a Japanese maple tree is late summer or early autumn, at least one month before the first frost. They are reasonably forgiving of disruption providing you cut a wide and deep hole and leave as much soil clinging to the roots as possible when you dig them up. Acer palmatum dissectum 'Baldsmith' - a handsome acer with a mounded form, with lacy leaves which emerge bright orange/red and develop into shades of green, pink and orange through the summer months. The combination of old and new leaves adorning the branches throughout summer makes for a beautiful rainbow of colour, adding spectacular interest to any garden. Culturally, the maple leaf has been a common symbol for strength and endurance. It is featured on both the Canadian flag and the Canadian coat of arms and is also their national tree. Acer x conspicuum ‘Phoenix’ has bright pink stems while Acer palmatum ‘Winter Flame’ has red or coral coloured branches. Acer palmatum 'Ukigumo' - a beautiful mottled variegated deciduous foliage of white and green gives this Acer an appearance of light and fluffy and therefore is known as the ‘Floating Cloud’ maple. It is an ideal Acer to use in a tranquil setting or sensory garden. Acer palmatum 'Butterfly' - an upright shrub bearing 5-7 lobed leaves irregulary margined with creamy-white leaves that can sometimes be tinged pink.

Are acer trees easy to grow?

Partial or dappled shade is required for variegated varieties to prevent the leaves from being scorched by the strong afternoon sun. Purple and red leaved trees require a decent amount of sunlight to develop their rich, dark complexion, whilst green-leaved Acers tolerate full sun but do best with light shade at the hottest part of the day. Japanese maples don't normally require staking, but if you're growing a cascading form and want a taller tree it's possible to stake a few branches upright, keeping them staked until they are firm and support themselves. This will create an impressive, eye-catching, multi-tiered tree. If you were hoping to brighten up a bare area however, then there is good news as there are Acers that provide colour interest through the winter even when the leaves have fallen. It’s fair to say that even the most novice gardeners should be able to achieve great success with acer trees.
