About this deal

Like purpura, petechiae change color as the body breaks down and absorbs the pooled blood. The color transitions from reddish-purplish to brown, orange, blue, or green, and these spots do not fade or change color under pressure. Petechiae are red, pink, or purple patches just under the skin. They are smaller than 2 mm and usually flat.

Classification of purpura

Approximately half of people have signs or symptoms of other medical conditions. These can include: Aplastic anaemia (anaemia caused by problems with production of the platelets and other blood cells by the bone marrow). Drugs that suppress the immune system, such as prednisone, may help elevate platelet levels. In patients with platelet counts that are low enough to be life threatening, doctors may offer immune globulin treatment.

Purpura isn’t a diagnosis. It’s a sign of something else. Once your healthcare provider determines the discolored skin spots are purpura, they must determine what’s causing it. Other people develop TTP after having another condition. Doctors call this “acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura,” which is unrelated to issues with the ADAMTS13 gene. Instead, the body produces antibodies that cause the enzyme to malfunction. Purpura has many different causes. Some of them are life-threatening, such as severe infections or bone marrow failure. Some are serious but manageable with treatment, such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Others will resolve just by stopping the medicine, or whatever caused the rash to appear. The seriousness of the rash depends on what is causing it. How is purpura diagnosed? These patches of ruptured blood vessels can look dark purple or brown. However, they typically fade within 1–2 weeks. Some hyperpigmentation may remain after the purpura resolves. Itching purpura presents acutely on the legs with diffuse purpuric, orange to brown macules and patches, accompanied by severe pruritus. It can evolve to become widespread and often has a chronic course. It is most common in middle-aged men. [20] [21]Asif M, et al. (2019).
