About this deal

Arnold, Gary (10 June 1983). "Octopussy". The Washington Post. Archived from the original on 22 June 2020 . Retrieved 14 May 2020. August: This Month in Bond History". CommanderBond.com. Archived from the original on 5 August 2008 . Retrieved 18 August 2007.

Octopussy was made amid some behind-the-scenes turbulence. United Artists, Bond’s long-time distributor, took a major hit after Michael Cimino’s mega-flop, Heaven’s Gate, and was sold to MGM. Glen remembers “terrific pressure” from MGM to economise Octopussy. Octopussy is a 1983 spy film and the thirteenth in the James Bond series produced by Eon Productions. It is the sixth to star Roger Moore as the MI6 agent James Bond. It was directed by John Glen and the screenplay was written by George MacDonald Fraser, Richard Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson. Berham, Debbie (30 August 2001). "Octopussy: Review". BBC. Archived from the original on 5 March 2008 . Retrieved 13 August 2007. I had watched Octopussy before reading the stories. But, the movie adaptation contains elements of this and The Property of a Lady and has built up on then. Octopussy has been condensed into a dialogue in the movie and while The Property of the Lady became a scene. Lunsford, J. Lynn (22 September 2006). "Filming air combat is as risky as a dogfight". Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Archived from the original on 29 September 2007 . Retrieved 12 August 2007.In the third story, a clerk within MI-6 who has been sending information to the KGB is being paid off with a Faberge egg. M is fully well aware of what this clerk has been doing and has made sure over the last three years that they never pass on sensitive authentic information. Bond concludes that since the agent is selling the egg at a Sotheby's auction, the local resident director at the embassy will attend the auction and hunts him down. It seemed as though the plot was going to shift the motivations of the lead villain from craving world domination down to simply a jewel thief. To me, that was intriguing. Bringing the stories to a more realistic focus would have been compelling for this film. But instead we got a mess of a film. I'm just very tired of the use of nuclear weapon's for the lead villain. It's been used over and over again. Not every bad guy has nukes.

Octopussy, which hit cinemas in June 1983, put Bond on the trail of a Fabergé egg, a radical Russian general, and Octopussy herself – smuggler, cult leader and all-round temptress (played by returning Bond girl Maud Adams). All of which leads Bond onto a circus train, where he hides from a pair of knife-throwing twins by slipping into the nearest fancy dress. “He’s in this carriage and there are all these costumes hanging up,” says Glen. “Suddenly: where did Roger go? Then we cut to this gorilla costume and you see Roger’s eyes behind the mask…” Showing his age and literally running away with the circus, Roger Moore stars in this pedestrian Bond adventure where the title proves the most thrilling component. Seeing 007 dressed up as a clown pretty much sums up how silly, diluted, and unexciting this series had become when compared to the intoxicating high bar set during the swinging '60s. Wilner, Norman. "Rating the Spy Game". MSN. Archived from the original on 5 December 2008 . Retrieved 27 June 2009. Tidbit: The title " Octopussy" didn't always translate well, or at all, into foreign languages, so some countries got some creative titles. Some time later, with the plan foiled, Khan has returned to his palace and prepares to flee. Bond and Octopussy also return separately to India. Bond arrives at Khan's palace just as Octopussy and her troops launch an assault on the grounds. But there’s some dramatic heft behind Moore's one-liners, canoodling and mighty eyebrows. Just watch him engaging in a battle of wits with Louis Jourdan’s suave and shady Kamal Khan – trying to outbid one other in a Sotheby’s auction – and squaring off against Berkoff’s Orlov. Or even when wearing clown make-up, warning the circus-goers that they're about to be nuked. “It proved Roger could be serious as Bond,” says Field. “He wasn’t always sending it up.”
