The School of Informatics does not accept applications for second year entry to our programmes. Year 2 English language qualifications must be no more than three and a half years old from the start date of the degree you are applying to study, unless you are using IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL or Trinity ISE, in which case it must be no more than two years old. Studying at the University of Edinburgh's School of Informatics provides you with a strong foundation in computer science. Your performance is insufficient to progress to Year 3 Honours. Your progression status to the Ordinary degree will be reviewed after the August diet. If you are considering buying a computer, your first decision is whether to buy a desktop, laptop or a tablet. A tablet is the most limited; you won’t be able to do much coursework on one. Most students find laptops the most versatile, but the decision is personal. You will type quite a lot and should choose a set-up that lets you do so comfortably. In laptops the trade-off between a large screen and the weight of a machine you will carry around needs careful consideration. For most purposes, any modern processor will be fine; amount of RAM tends to be more important and if you’re going to upgrade anything you might consider this first. Coursework is unlikely to require you to have more disk space than now comes as standard. Students who are members of Edinburgh University Formula Student and have not taken Informatics Experiential Learning (Level 10) in Year 3 may request a concession from the School Curriculum Approval Officer to replace any 20 credits of Informatics courses in the DPT with IEL-10. Approval will require written permission from the IEL-10 tutor confirming your eligibility for that course. This option is not available to students whose honours project is already based on their work with Edinburgh University Formula Student. For SQA, GCSE and IB students, unless a higher level is specified in the stated entry requirements, a pass is required in English at the following grades or higher:

SQA Highers: AAAAA (achievement by end of S5 preferred). BBB must be achieved in one year of S4-S6. Students on most Informatics degrees are required to take the following compulsory courses. In all other cases: you will not be allowed to progress to Year 3. If you are permitted to continue at the University, you must repeat Year 2 and make up the missing credits. You will be invited to a meeting with the Progression Officer to discuss whether this programme is right for you, and if so which courses must be repeated. You will develop a solid scientific understanding of computer-based systems and gain the practical skills to analyse, design, implement and maintain them in any setting. Master of Informatics (MInf)
