Severn Suite’ is my kind of music, so I was puzzled by the approaches,” he says. “The hall had a bright acoustic, so I left knowing my interpretation would be well suited. This line of conveyance is peculiarly adapted for pleasure parties, who may enjoy a delightful and healthy excursion on the Peak Forest Canal, and spend a day in the rural woods and pleasure grounds in the neighbourhood. The scenery is beautiful in the extreme, and cannot be equalled in any part of the country.' Enterprising businessmen

Memories of Marple : pictorial and descriptive reminiscences of a life-time in Marple leisure hours on the banks of the Goyt the Tame and the Etherow with stories old and new of bygone days Again about 1954, inside The Albert Schools in the big room upstairs, at the crowning of the Rose Queen ceremony. My twin brother and I are taking our responsibilities very seriously! The eyes of all the important people of the church are upon us.Hugh Lane and Margaret Cochran were married in 1938 at the Congregational Church.By 1965, they had bought a home at 1 Lyme Grove in Marple, along with their three children, (myself and my two brothers), my older brother being born in 1945, and myself and my twin brother in 1949. But, I think what I'm really left wondering here is why in the world even try doing this in the first place? I'm very sad to add a footnote that Hannah passed away on 9 December 2020, aged 85. Her son John says it meant a lot to her that people were interested in her stories and I'm so glad that she shared them with us. Mark Whittaker, 10 December 2020. Marple Congregational Sunday School Rose Queen around 1934 in the grounds of Rose Hill House. From Marple Local History Society Archives. The Smithy is the single storey shed above. Keith was correct about the open shed but where is the spreading chestnut tree? The photo is early 1900s so I guess the spreading chestnut tree was a mere sapling – Hilary Atkinson.)

Only three stories in this collection were worth reading. The ones that were fine enough to read were written by Jean Kwok, Val McDermid, and Karen M. McManus. The other nine didn’t even have a well written or good enough mystery that made reading the story worth my time. I learned from the introduction that in 1927 Miss Jane Marple first arrived on the scene, and her final appearance was in Agatha Christie's last novel in 1976 - the year that Christie died. That's quite a legacy and how amazing that twelve different authors came up with a new story for her!

In 1825 James Warhurst became the first landlord of the Spring Gardens in Compstall. He was probably responsible for building the pub itself and he also leased a large plot of land behind it that he laid out as Pleasure Gardens. In 1837 the licence passed to his son, Caleb, who was to remain as landlord for 36 years. Caleb leased further land and during his tenancy turned the Pleasure Gardens into a major tourist attraction that frequently received several thousand visitors on Bank Holidays. Footnote: In recent years there's been a bit of a resurgence at Roman Lakes and they now have a wonderful Tea Room that does great food and excellent home-made cakes. They also host regular "Tea Dances" on the last Saturday of each month that have become very popular and are often sold out. But the Spring Gardens was Marple's most popular destination Bugler Sergeant C. A. Ashton of the 1st Marple Company of the Boys' Brigade, standing by the throne beneath the trees, heralded the entrance of each section of the procession. PATHWAY OF ROSES.

Horses of course came into their own as abundant fuel grew locally. I watched fascinated as they were fitted with their metal shoes at the local smithy at the bottom of the road, where it joins Church Street. (Ed. Church Lane) My picture is of a shed open on one side, underneath a great chestnut tree - but I may be being influenced by Longfellow’s poem. Certainly the smith was a mighty man, hammering the white hot metal on his anvil, and then amazingly fitting it still sizzling to the hoof, the animal not seeming to turn a hair. If you are in the market for a collection of short stories in the mystery genre, you really can't do better than Marple.

While some of the stories may have been “fine”, all this collection of stories did was prove that Miss Marple could only be written by Agatha Christie. Prizes for costumes in the procession were awarded on the adjudication of Mr. Phillips to the following: Ladies: 1, Miss M. Hoole (cruising girl); 2. Doreen Heyward (gipsy). Gents.: 1, R. Phillips and H. Wilde. (Darby and Joan); 2, K. Bryant (harlequin). We know that Christie's Jane Marple has travelled to the Caribbean, for example, but she didn't really like the 'foreigness' and only really made sense of it by reducing people to facsimiles of personages in St Mary's Mead - to therefore project her happily wandering around Manhattan, sailing to Hong Kong and holidaying in Italy rather misses the point. Even on home ground, the idea of Miss Marple dining at the high table of an Oxford college doesn't really fit.

What I remember is James Scott, who nobody could say didn’t know a good band when he heard one, tell an irate bandsman who flippantly demanded to know how Marple won, reply; ‘They were the best band playing a wonderful piece of music in the style it was meant to be played.’ My father, John, came from Bradford in Manchester and met my Mother, Mary, at the Roman Lakes. John and his mate Harry rented a wooden hut on a farm in Marple Bridge. The Roman Lakes has had a big impact on our lives, as you will see later on. It appeared that the concept of never speaking ill of the dead fell into abeyance when the dead were of the servant class. Then followed a clever display of folk dancing by the maids of honour on the green before the throne; and Sheila Wilcox gave a graceful exposition of classic dancing. In the summer of 2019 the late Ann Hearle generously donated her collection of local postcards to the Society.A Deadly Wedding Day by Dreda Say Mitchell - Marple enlists the help of Miss Bella to get to the bottom of a murder at a wedding reception. This one was, easily one of my favourites. It's a well thought out and executed mystery, and the addition of Miss Bella brings out Miss Marple's best observational skills. 4/5 The draw made my mind up about a few things - although it was the night before that I really felt we were in with a chance of victory,” Garry recalls. No band bus Impressing me with a different approach was “Murder at the Villa Rosa” by Elly Griffiths which was told from the POV of Signor Jeffries, who meets Miss Marple in picturesque Italy. She was more of a secondary character but as always, she makes herself very useful with her “knowledge of human nature “.
