As with all cask strength whiskies, it improves with a dash of water. Taste: Some sherry right away. Toffee apples. Orange and lemon. Slightly woody with cinnamon and ginger. Decent weight to it considering the low abv.

Overall: This malt has a lot going for it. Despite the recalcitrant nose, there is a delectable balance of nutty and fruity notes on the palate that is unrivaled by sherried malts in this price range. The balance here is impeccable, and the finish is flawless – no overly-wooded character flaws. While I still prefer GlenDronach for all-in sherry, this malt contends with Balvenie DoubleWood 12 for the “mid-priced partially sherried malt” slot in my cabinet. Shortcrust pastry. Woody spice. Touch of sherry. Vanilla. Glengoyne 12 is a non-chill-filtered Scotch, allowing it to retain more flavors and appeal to discerning whisky enthusiasts.
