Queer manga has a long and interesting history with distinct genres being prominent from the 1970s onwards including Yaoi, or Boy’s Love and Yuri Girl’s Love from the 1970s onwards. Here are a few very recent collections to get you started on your LGBTQ+ manga journey. My Lesbian Experience With Loneliness & My Solo Exchange Diary by Kabi Nagata It is 17th century France, the age of discovery and scientific revolution. Sulvain, a mysterious traveler, is absorbed in the Parisian academic scene. Through his friendship with the renowned Christian Huygens, Sulvain has the chance to study the latest discoveries of the distant cosmos. (We profiled it here!) Whether or not his death was suicide hangs over the book while Bechdel attempts to piece together her fractured relationship with him, her own queerness, her success, and even her relationship with her psychiatrist. An experimental narrative in ink & watercolor, with four interrelated stories: the memoir of a failed sailor, the quest of a traveling ghost, the adventure of a genderqueer Nancy Drew, and some rampaging giant robots. Of note, the characters are all transgender or genderqueer. Part of what I love about queer comics right now is the range of ages they’re available for — the rise of the middle-grade graphic novel and the availability of early-reader books. Not a lot of women and queer people make comics right now, and you don’t see a ton of books about queer boys. This is a book about acne on the forefront, and about how your body looks and how to deal with it, but it’s also about asexuality and fitting in.

For those unaware, GLAAD is an American monitoring organisation, founded in 1985 as the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation – although now known solely by the acronym, so as not to exclude bi, trans, and other queer people – to combat homophobia in reporting and to lobby for better representation in media. The main character Acantha is ace/aro. Honey Hart leads The Candy Hearts and Turpentine leads The Sourballs. This is the story of their rivalry… and attraction.

This webcomic follows the wild adventures of an upbeat hippie, living her life in love and joy. (And beer and sex.) You’ll get to meet her various other friends, all as lovely and bonkers as she is. This comic also includes an ace character! Eth’s Skin is a comic about a fisher named Eth living on the edge of a ragged ocean. It’s a queer (and genderqueer) fantasy full of monsters and low tides, cool non-binary individuals, queer relationships, and a pet pygmy harbour seal named Goblin. Tillie Walden is one of the best-known creators in queer indie comics. She’s a prolific writer and artist, known for books like the swoony road-trip fantasy Are You Listening, the science fiction epic On a Sunbeam, the autobiographical graphic novel Spinning, and most recently, the Telltale Games tie-in graphic novel Clementine. What do you look for in a queer indie comic? Not all heroes wear capes. Some do, but not all. Seth was one such person when their life changed forever. We follow a Latinx non-binary cutie as they learn to be a hero and maybe get a smooch or two along the way.

It’s the story of their differences, their similarities, and their relationship. A hopeful and kind story. Also food. Yvonne gets a most unexpected birthday surprise — Lucos, a refurbished Heartbreaker android, a fact neither Yvonne’s service dog, nor ex, is happy about.

Amira and Sadie are two very different princesses who decide to take their happily ever after into their own hands. ChaosLife is a semi-autobiographical comic, focusing on the queer relationship between A. Stiffler and K. Copeland, who create the comic! It also delves into politics, GSM issues, mental health, pop culture, cats, and other randomness. Feeling different and alone in your feelings is inevitable at times for ace (asexual) or aro (aromantic) people with a world that pushes romance and sex as the norm and ignores the other relationships that bond us – like friendship and familial. Everyone knows this book, but I will continue to recommend it. Most people have already read it, but it still stands out, because of the way it intersects queerness with the ideas of immigration and family and fairy tales. It made me realize there is so much to be done with the idea of history and magic with queerness. And it’s starting to appear even more. I feel like I’m seeing it in more books.
