You wouldn’t believe that the Compact SMG has already been considerably nerfed if you use it now. At release, it was a bit of a joke and the most unbalanced weapon introduced to any competitive game. Nowadays it isn’t quite as strong, though it’s still more than capable of causing a lot of mayhem to opponents and structures. People are begging for it to be removed, and it’s easy to see why. Your other close-range options include SMGs and pistols. The silenced pistol is strong, but is better suited to mid-range battles because of its lower damage (see section below). SMGs are decent, especially the tactical variants, and are more versatile than shotguns. But you should only lean on them early in the game when you don’t have an assault rifle to deal with enemies at mid-range. Up close, shotguns better them. Fortnite's best rifles: SCAR and burst-fire assault rifle Use the minigun to tear up buildings: it’s too inaccurate to rely on in firefights. Fortnite's best sniper rifle: Bolt-action sniper Introduced with the V9.01 patch notes, the Tactical Assault Rifle acts less like an AR and more like an SMG - which is good, because as of this patch the Suppressed SMG is in dire need of some company. A high rate of fire makes for some very nice damage to players and structures alike, but only at close range. At long range, the gun is severely let down by some tremendous damage drop-off, so I can't see myself using this as my primary Assault Rifle. The next best thing is the burst-fire assault rifle. It’ll deal roughly 30 damage per body shot, and its three-round burst means you can deal 90 damage in a single punch. If you land some headshots, you’ll rip a shielded enemy to shreds. The automatic M16 assault rifle is solid, and useful early on, but its bullet spread and lower damage mean that the SCAR and the burst rifle are the better choices later in the game. You should only really consider hanging onto the blue, Rare variant of the M16.

Consumables are items that have an effect, then disappear. Many consumables are used to deal direct damage to players, in a similar vein to some Explosive Weapons, and many heal Health and/or Shields.

Midas' Drum Gun

If you play like me, you always want to have a close-range weapon in your inventory. While many prefer shotguns for such encounters, I've found the Compact SMG gives me a better chance of winning gun battles. Shotguns are brutal but slow, whereas the Compact SMG gives you a big magazine and almost unrivaled firing rate, meaning anyone who strays too close can be eliminated swiftly with plenty of the clip left over for their teammates. Kymera Ray Gun Damage per second (DPS) ignores reload times. Weapons with 1 shot in their magazine will still have a set DPS which is not actually applicable in game.

Arguably the most versatile and reliable gun in the game, a purple or orange "Bursty" is must-have loot whenever it drops from chests or into eliminated players' loot piles. The Burst AR is extremely accurate and fires off three rounds with every trigger-pull, allowing you to recenter the gun on your likely moving target with very limited recoil. In seasons where the Burst Assault Rifle is vaulted, its absence is sorely missed. Compact Submachine GunPerhaps controversially the only sniper rifle to make the list for the best Fortnite weapons, the Bolt-Action Sniper Rifle has been around for the longest time as it’s a dependable and rewarding gun to use. It takes a little bit more skill than most weapons and can create some boring situations in the final circle, but that’s just because everyone knows that one shot to the head with it is a death sentence. I'd use this in the same manner as I'd use a Drum Gun, or a Suppressed SMG: good for following up after a shotgun blast at close quarters, and good for suppressing the enemy; but compared to the other Assault Rifles on offer, even a Gold Tactical AR is very weak at longer ranges. Light Bullets: Used for weapons which deal a small amount of damage per shot, such as Submachine Guns and some Pistols. In other shooters, you might want to bind certain weapons to any customisable mouse keys you have, and while that’s an option here it’s probably better to use those keys for your building tools. You never know when you’ll need to throw down a wall under fire, but that’s all advice you can read in our collection of Fortnite building tips.
