About this deal

I’ve ready about 10 of Binchy’s 15 novels and this is among my favorites (along with “Scarlet Feather,” “Light a Penny Candle” and “Circle of Friends”). Most of her novels, including this one, are set in Ireland in the mid-20th century and have a slew of well developed characters. I jumped off the bed—Cumberbatch yowled at me, not happy that I stopped petting him—and took the steps downstairs two at a time. Design Your Own Treasure Map: At the conclusion of The Firefly Summer, Ryanna finally puts together the clues that lead her to her mother’s buried treasure. Consider the items her mother has buried: Why do they have enough significance to her to be left as a treasure? Next, think about the things you hold most dear. After taking time to reflect, make a list of treasures you’d hide to preserve or protect them.

Although fireflies in Florida are impressive, Texas has one of the longest firefly seasons in the nation. These lightning bugs make a forest or meadow look enchanted sometimes as late as November. Fireflies in the East An only child meets her mysterious extended family and uncovers a real life treasure hunt over the course of one unforgettable summer.I know for most people, this might not be weird. Normal dads probably sit at kitchen tables all the time.

The state of Georgia also has many fireflies. They are most common in the northern mountains. You don’t have to drive too far away from the city either to view these beautiful glowing beetles. For example, right outside of Atlanta is the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, where you can see fireflies during early summer. I know I've mentioned it twice already, but this book was just so much FUN. I haven't read a true middle grade novel in a while, and I forgot how genuinely comforting they feel. This book reminded me of the simple joys of being a kid and the endless possibilities of summer. Even if I wasn't a summer camp kid, I still felt nostalgic for the times my brother, cousin, and I would play together all summer long. The treasure hunt was really clever and I loved Ryanna's determination to see it through even when it was difficult. Ships in Glass Bottles: Toward the end of The Firefly Summer, Ryanna and Holden search his father’s ship collection in hopes of finding the missing deed to the Van Camp land sold to the Van Camps by Holden’s grandfather. As a group, watch the following “How To” video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33ihECpRQ-c Four sisters that are all so different but share a family tragedy that they never speak of but is so embedded in their thoughts and decisions. Their young brother died in a terrible accident that has left their family trying to survive a loss that they don’t understand. Years later the accident has left them each with “baggage” that they must unload as each sister comes into a new season. Failed marriages, alcoholism, and new beginnings, how has the past affected each of them and how can they be freed from the past. Poignant yet hopeful, Firefly Summer is an uplifting story of the resilience of sisterhood and the bright glimpses of joy and solace that, like fireflies after rain, can follow even the deepest heartaches.

The dialogue is really good and natural. I appreciate it. I like how it is mentioned that Holden was named for a favorite book character of his father’s but Catcher in the Rye was never specifically mentioned. The writing style was great, I can find no fault. My issue was really with the characters. With the age of the four sisters, I found it difficult to believe that they all of a sudden were coming to terms with the death of their brother. There was no real turning point in the story that would have brought theses sisters to this point in their grieving process, particularly after over 50 years. It felt kind of random to me. Not to mention that most of the characters were not really likeable, or if they were, they were just boring. It’s this beautiful story about 11 year old Ryanna who lost her mom when she was 3 and is estranged from her moms family. She gets invited to stay at the grandparents old campgrounds on the park in PA and there she discovers she has many aunts, uncles, and cousins who she didn’t know beautiful. It was lovely seeing her forge these close relationships with her family and learn more about her Mom through her stay. Firefly Summer” spans four years in the 1960s and focuses on what happens to a small town when an American millionaire (with his two teen children and former mistress in tow) comes in to build a huge hotel. It culminates with the hotel’s grand opening, which ends in a very unexpected way. But this was my chance to. I could go to Lake Phoenix—I could find out more about my mom. Because if there was this photo, there were more. Whole albums and lots of stories—stuff my dad probably didn’t even know. I’d get to hear all of it. And as an added bonus, I would get to the bottom of the feud.

Ginger was my stepmother—she and my dad got married eight months ago in Ojai, which is a town two hours outside Los Angeles. (It’s pronounced “oh hi,” and my dad and Ginger made shirts to go in everyone’s welcome bags that read OJAI THERE, WELCOME TO THE WEDDING!) NTSF:SD:SUV – 3.01 Sneak Peek And Synopsis". summer-glau.net. July 25, 2013. Archived from the original on November 3, 2013 . Retrieved July 25, 2013. I have read several of Morgan Matson's YA books and they have all been very enjoyable. So when I found that she had a middle grade book coming out I was very excited. This is a very fun summer read that I think readers will enjoy. Ryanna lives in LA with her dad and stepdad. They have the whole summer planned but then Ryanna gets invited to spend time on the East Coast with her maternal grandparents at their lake camp property. Her mother passed away when she was very young and she has memories of that side of the family. She decided to go to learn more about her mother as her father find it to hard to talk about it. Once there it is immediately evident that her idea of how it would be was wrong. Instead what follows is her getting to know her loud and fun extended family and cousins. There are smores, lake time, and treasure hunts. Soon though there is trouble that might cut her summer plans short and the future of the camp is in jeorpardy. Thank you to NetGalley.com for the opportunity to read an Advanced Reader Copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. What’s the purpose of their ability to light up? It’s firstly a method of communicating between fireflies. They each have their own unique flashing pattern, which aids them in finding mates. If a male flashes a certain pattern, the female will respond with her own pattern, so that they can locate each other. This lighted communication also serves as a warning to other insects or animals that may prey on them, as fireflies have toxins that are dangerous to some predators while tasting terrible to others. Their flashes are telling these predators to stay away. But…” I looked between my dad and Ginger. Ginger had her serious face on, which was a real contrast to her cover-up, which had embroidered rabbits on it and read SUN’S OUT BUNS OUT. “The summer’s already started. We have a whole plan in place.” The Firefly Summer is a summery, fun middle grade that follows Ryanna as she is invited to spend the summer at her maternal grandparents' summer camp, Camp Van Camp (what a great name). Ryanna's mom died when she was little, and her dad never talks about that side of the family, so she decides to go to the camp in the hopes of learning more about her mom. When she gets there, she finds a massive family full of aunts, uncles, and cousins waiting for her, as well as a mystery and treasure hunt from her mom to solve.
