When last we left Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart (collectively known as Eurythmics), they had survived a stint in the failed British band The Tourists and a mostly-ignored debut album ( In the Garden) (1981) to release Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (1983), the LP that put them over the top. Touch, released late in 1983, was the album that would make sure they'd stay there for the next decade and beyond. It was a #1 album in the U.K. and a #10 album in the U.S., and was eventually certified as Platinum in both countries, also going Double-Platinum in Canada and Gold in Germany. Additionally, it was named as one of Rolling Stone magazine's Top 500 Greatest Albums of All Time in 2003, and again in 2012 when they revised their list. Touch made Eurythmics international superstars.

A fter playing to the galleries with the crowd-pleasing Revenge, Eurythmics took a left-turn for its successor. “We did the classic Dave and Annie thing of like ‘let’s make a really obscure electronic album again,’” Stewart told Classic Pop. Elsewhere, “Cool Blue” was a showcase for Stewart, someone who wasn’t just all about synths, as it relied more bass from Dean Garcia (who’d become more known as one half of Curve in the ’90s) than it did the keyboards and drum machines.

A well-done bookend to their full-on synth pop period, it showed Eurythmics as forward thinkers who could also put enough melodies and appealing ideas in to be more than a fringe band. After the commercial failure of Savage, this is a return to the brassy R&B of Be Yourself Tonight and Revenge but with less success. Despite the far from harmonious circumstances of its creation, flashes of brilliance still remain in places. In the end, Lennox wasn’t going to give up her career, but she would be on her terms — making the albums she wanted when she wanted to make them (1992’s classic Diva being the best of the bunch). She made sure to prioritize family in the process. She also spent more of her time on charitable endeavors and activism, which have been more of her focus over the last 20 years.
