About this deal

You’ll find so-called ‘ upgrade kits’ online, which are basically both derailleurs, shifters, battery, wires and cassette all bundled together. All else being equal, though, for most riders it’s unlikely that this weight difference is going to make much difference to how fast you can climb a hill, and even less when riding on the flat.

Swapping wheels over could cause more or less incidence of rub, but it was simple to adjust and dial out. Ashley Quinlan / Our Media Di2 stands for “Digital Integrated Intelligence” – Shimano’s version of electronic shifting. DI2 gives you instant, accurate, lightning-fast shifts the first and every time, at the push of a button. Even in the most extreme conditions, shifting is precise and controlled. You can change gear even under heavy load while climbing or accelerating.

The Shimano Di2 brand

The front derailleur is where the first major concession to Dura-Ace and Ultegra Di2 is seen, and certainly noticeable when riding. Sometimes people ask me: "is it possible to switch off my Di2?", or: "How do I switch my bike on?". The simple answer is: you don't. The same ability to customise the shift buttons, shifting ferocity and multi-shifting (within the limits of the hardware), index and set limits, and update the firmware are all present and correct. Not a problem if the limits are set up correctly, but get your front derailleur too far out and you could, literally, pedal it right off.

Again, I prefer having too much wire over having too little. The excess wire will be hidden away in the down tube and seat tube, and the performance is the same as that of a shorter wire. Buy the componentsThe difference is, once again, small, but the pedalling experience is slightly less smooth through the pedal stroke than I’ve felt with either Dura-Ace or Ultegra Di2 (which are standard-setters). Type 1 Port Gear Cable has a cable stop, stopping the gear or brake cable housing, allowing the bare inner cable to run internally through the frame. the clearance is less than 2mm on the radius. I'm guessing you have a steel BB shell; I don't think it would hurt to make a shallow groove in the lower part of the shell (after all some are slotted), but If you go with the bar end junction box, you could also fit a EW-WU111 Di2 D-Fly E-Tube Bluetooth Wireless Unit in the other bar end. It doesn't cost a whole lot more to do and I like it. It's easier to configure your di2 and you can push some info to your head unit, like di2 battery level and gear selection.

Once the system has been set up and shifting fully dialed in, it keeps running smoothly, all the time. You do not have to re-index Di2 systems or replace the shift cables. Ever. Shift mode 2 (S2) - Red and green LEDs flash three times. By default this is full-synchro and this automatically shifts the front derailleur as you shift the rear derailleur. This approach contrasts with SRAM’s modular design across Red eTap AXS, Force AXS, Rival eTap AXS, and Apex AXS, where each derailleur gets its own separate battery.A) I've been considering trying to clean up the front end of my TCR Disc by going with a bar end Di2 Junction box on the right drop and internally routed bars (Pro Vibe and Pro Vibe stem but open to suggestions). I think, and forgive my Di2 noobness, this should leave me with a front brake line coming from the bottom of the left side of the bar and a rear brake line/1 Di2 wire that could be shrink wrapped together exiting from the bottom right side of the bar and into the frame with all other Di2 wires inside the bars. That said, other than the new handle bar and bar end junction box what other Di2 components would I need? While 12-speed Di2 simplifies things greatly, it isn’t always easy to know whether or not you’ve really bought all the parts you need, and wire lengths generally confuse people too.
