About this deal

Just about everything in that list is Canon's latest and greatest, and the external microphone input is a nice extra. The one feature that's not new is the 9-point autofocus system that you'll use when shooting through the viewfinder – it's identical to what's found the original SL1, which is over four years old. You'll get a much better focusing experience by shooting in live view, which uses Canon's excellent Dual Pixel AF technology. Compared to... The main consumption is the Live View, meaning that sensor is continually On, drawing power, exposing and CPU is constantly compressing a video feed from the sensor. Enable the Live View on DSLR and their battery times are worse than mirrorless. The available white balance settings are Auto, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, Fluorescent and Custom; there is no way to enter a Kelvin value manually. You can fine-tune any of the presets using the White Balance Correction feature. The ISO speed can be changed by pressing the ISO button and turning the control wheel in front of it. You do not have to hold down the button while turning the wheel. The ISO speed can be set from ISO 100 to ISO 25600 in full-stop increments. If you turn ISO Expansion on in the Custom Functions menu, you can even dial in ISO 51200; a boosted setting. Auto ISO is also available. The chosen ISO speed is also displayed in the viewfinder. Semi-transparent LCD in viewfinder that can overlay grids, different AF points, an electronic level, and more The night photograph was very good, with the maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and Bulb mode allowing you to capture enough light in all situations. The different Picture Styles and the ability to create your own are a real benefit to JPEG shooters, as are the Highlight Tone Priority and Auto Lighting Optimizer custom settings when used in the right conditions. The HDR mode combines three images taken at different exposures to create a single image with greater dynamic range, while the Creative Filters allow you to preview the effect before shooting.

The EOS 200D / SL2’s mode dial provides access to the different shooting options and unlike the chunky raised dial of its predecessor, it’s now recessed within the body and turned by your thumb from the rear. The new mode dial also has fewer positions than before, although the core options remain. Alongside the traditional Program, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority and Manual modes, there’s Canon’s green square Auto+, flash-off, Creative Auto, SCN and Creative Filter modes. Anyone coming from the older 100D / SL1 will note the addition of Creative Filters and the removal of the four dedicated positions for the most common scene presets. The Canon EOS 200D (called the Digital Rebel SL2 in North America) is the the world’s lightest DSLR camera with the world’s fastest AF system. The 24 megapixel 200D / SL2 offers Dual Pixel CMOS AF for the world’s fastest Live View focusing, a vari-angle screen with touchscreen capabilities, a 63-zone metering sensor, 9 auto-focus points, ISO range of 100-25,600 (expandable to 51,200), a guided user interface, DIGIC 7 processor and 5fps continuous shooting, and Bluetooth, NFC and Wi-Fi connectivity. The 200D's video mode offers 1080p Full HD recording at 60/50/30/25/24fps with full manual control over exposure and gain. We’ve seen Canon roll out its new Guided User interface across several DSLRs now, including the EOS 800D and EOS 77D. It has been designed to aid newcomers to a DSLR who’d prefer a more animated menu and some basic shooting advice based on the exposure mode that’s selected. The 200D / SL2 is well-equipped for wireless connectivity with Wifi, NFC and Bluetooth, all of which I’ll cover later in the review. I’ll just finish for now by noting the 200D / SL2 is also compatible with Canon’s recent BR-E1 Bluetooth remote control accessory. Like most modern DSLRs, the EOS 200D / Rebel SL2 is equipped with two different autofocus systems depending on whether you’re shooting with the traditional optical viewfinder or with the screen in Live View. There’s pros and cons to both systems, but overall the Live View experience is superior in almost every respect.

The camera has access to mechanical shutter speeds between 1/4000 and 30 seconds, plus a Bulb option for longer exposures; the fastest flash sync speed is 1/200. There’s no built-in Bulb timers for pre-set periods, but when shooting in Live View you can start and stop a Bulb exposure by tapping the screen and a timer is helpfully displayed. There’s no interval timer facilities built-in either, unless you count the timelapse movie mode which doesn’t record the individual images. Offering some consolation though is the supplied EOS Utility for Mac OS and Windows systems which, when connected via USB or Wifi, offers both an interval timer and Bulb timer; the Camera Connect app also lets you tap your phone’s screen to start a Bulb exposure and again to stop it. In case you are wondering which of these cameras you should buy, then this is the right place to find an answer. Here you will find listed all the main differences among Canon EOS 200D and Canon EOS 800D, calculated by the CameraRace iCamRank algorithm. Michael can manual focus his lens and look through the viewfinder and see his results while the power is off.

All of the sample images in this review were taken using the 24 megapixel Fine JPEG setting, which gives an average image size of around 7Mb. I should also add that if the mode dial is set to Creative Filters and you enter movie mode, yet another selection of effects becomes available: Dream, Old Movies, Memory, Dramatic B&W, or Miniature which are applied automatically to the clip as you film – see the Movie mode section in a moment. There’s no shortage of fine detail in the centre of this wide-angle shot, and only a slight fall-off of focus towards the edges (1/160s, f/9, ISO 100, 29mm equivalent) sec (1/2 or 1/3 stop increments), Bulb (Total shutter speed range. Available range varies by shooting mode) Above: Meanwhile in Shutter Priority, the slider adjusts the shutter speed, with each end of the scale indicated by a person in motion with flowing on the left and frozen on the right.Enjoy high quality performance, low cost prints and ultimate convenience with the PIXMA G series of refillable ink tank printers.
