Occupational stress is also positively associated with relationship conflict (Friedman, Tidd, Currall, & Tsai, 2000). Specifically, employees who experienced higher levels of work-related stress also experienced higher levels of relationship conflict and higher levels of task conflict. EGM staff (June 2003). Employees who feel like their managers do not support them or treat them unfairly are at higher risk of burnout. As is the case with many aspects of running a business, you can’t know if your employees experience symptoms of burnout unless you take measurements. To put it simply, if you don’t take the necessary steps to fully understand the current state of your workforce, burnout symptoms may worsen. But measurement also brings responsibility: if you’re going to perform a baseline study, your employees will expect you to do something with the results. It’s important to note that feelings of burnout at work are not equivalent to a clinical diagnosis.Stress can also result in poor-quality sleep, which can affect health by increasing the risk of heart disease and diabetes (Ayas et al., 2003). Increased levels of stress increase the body’s vulnerability to other illnesses (Kivimäki et al., 2006). Experiencing high levels of stress can prolong the time that it takes to recover from a minor ailment such as a cold (Kivimäki et al., 2006). For example, while technology has made it possible for us to work from home indefinitely, it also ties us to work all day long. If there's a group call where workers dial in from London, Tokyo, New York and Dubai, some people will have to wake up at 0200 to dial in. If they don't, the company will find someone who will – because as long as we glamourise money, status and achievement, there will always be people who work hard to get them. Boundaries are also important. While you’re working, try not to work more than your hours on a regular basis. By shutting down your computer at the end of each day, and wearing ‘work’ clothes – even when working from home – you can help create boundaries. Sleep

Burnout is the result of occupational stress; if the cause of the stress is not work related, then it is unlikely to result in burnout. Ultimate Burnout Guide Bianchi R, et al. "Co-founders of Criterion Games, creators of Burnout, leave studio". Polygon . Retrieved 8 April 2019. Feeling stressed, tired, or anxious about work is not unusual, but burnout can cause decreased physical and psychological health. Today, it's all hell broke loose," says Lechner. A few decades ago, "the pervasiveness of this was nothing like what you see today”. While a lot of burnout "culture came from Wall Street", she says, it's even worse now, because we put tech entrepreneurs who barely sleep on a pedestal. (Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk tweeted in 2018 that when it came to his companies, "there are way easier places to work, but nobody ever changed the world on 40 hours a week".)Yet even though we’re working harder than ever, and young workers are faced with a potentially toxic combination of greater financial pressures ( student debt, combined with lower salaries and higher house prices), pressure to find ‘their passion’ and pressure to find a stable job in an increasingly insecure job market, there may be some small signs of change. Some researchers argue that people with high trait anxiety are at higher risk of developing anxiety symptoms in response to occupational stress (Koutsimani, Montgomery, & Georganta, 2019). Employees with high levels of trait anxiety are more likely to overcommit to their work and experience higher job demands, such as workload and time pressure (Mark & Smith, 2012).

Other factors contribute to burnout, including your lifestyle and personality traits. In fact, what you do in your downtime and how you look at the world can play just as big of a role in causing overwhelming stress as work or home demands.
