About this deal

The monster tells Conor the first story. This story teaches Conor that most people aren’t just ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but somewhere in between. Conor stays with his grandmother when his mother has to go into hospital and the monster helps him to understand that she isn't a bad person. At school, Conor is being bullied by Harry and falls out with Lily, his best friend. Conor’s grandmother arrives to help look after him. Conor learns that the doctors can’t do anything else to help his mother. He is angry with the monster.

The Monster is an ancient, wise and powerful force. It tells stories that reflect Conor's anger and teach him to see and react differently to his circumstances. Grandma is fiercely protective of her daughter. She wants to take care of Conor too but they are both stubborn and find it hard to communicate. The monster tells Conor the second story. Conor agrees to help destroy one of the character’s homes but when the monster leaves he realises that he has destroyed his grandmother’s things instead. The line between fiction and reality is blurred in this book. Sometimes it's not clear what's real and what is imagined. Accepting what we can't change is not easy, but over time the monster teaches Conor how to let go. The monster's magical tales reveal truths to Conor and show the power of facing our fears.Have you ever had a nightmare that seemed so real it was hard to know where it ended and reality began? A Monster Calls by Conor’s mother, Lizzie, is very unwell. She becomes increasingly ill during the book and has to go into hospital. Conor’s grandmother is very independent. At first she seems cold and strict, but it becomes clear that she is doing her best to take care of her daughter and grandson in a very difficult situation. Despite this, she is always positive and puts on a brave face when she talks to Conor. Sometimes this makes Conor feel very angry because he feels like he is being lied to.

She still reaches out to him though and tries to support Conor by letting him know that she sees him and misses him.Harry bullies Conor, tripping him up, punching him and saying mean things. Although Conor doesn’t like being bullied, Harry is one of the only people who seem to notice Conor at school. Conor O'Malley has just turned 13. His mother, Lizzie, is unwell and is trying to stay positive for Conor. The story begins when Conor wakes from a nightmare at 12:07am. The yew tree outside his bedroom has turned into a gigantic monster. Lily and Conor have known each other since they were babies. Conor is angry with Lily at the start of the book because she told a few people about his mother’s illness. Conor thinks it’s her fault that everyone in school avoids him.
