About this deal

The Cannondale SuperSix EVO Carbon frame delivers a beautifully lightweight chassis at around 915 grams via a carbon layup that consists primarily of intermediate modulus fibers with some higher modulus fibers strategically placed for increased stiffness where it’s required. The primary benefit of a torpedo mounted hydration system is that you literally do not need to do anything to use it except put the extended feeder tube in your mouth. The issue with this mount is that you will need to take more time to refill it, and the feeder tube can either distract you or even leak its contents as your race. Continuing the ‘aero is everything’ mantra Cannondale took a fresh look at bottle and bottle cage integration on the new SuperSix EVO, seeing an opportunity to enhance the aerodynamics of the bike even further. The new ReGrip Aero cages paired with Cannondale’s Gripper Aero water bottles actually help make the bike faster; these new bottles and cages create a more streamlined profile in combination with the SuperSix EVO’s chassis and improve aerodynamic efficiency thanks in no small part to the Gripper Aero bottle’s flat sides. There’s no worries when it comes to compatibility though; conventional water bottles fit the cages too, so if you’re taking mid-race hand-ups in the feed zone there won’t be any issues.

With the Mini Wing 105, this design combined with its other features makes this the best dual rear mount we came across, though it does come with some caveats not often seen with XLAB hydration systems. Up and Down The biggest difference between the Mini Wing 105 and most of XLAB’s other rear mounted hydration systems comes down to materials. All of that aerodynamic efficiency isn’t just down to those beautifully sculpted frame tube profiles. It’s Cannondale’s clever approach to total integration that also helps to make the SuperSix EVO so good at slicing through the air; by engineering the frame, fork, handlebars, wheels and seat post as one holistic system Cannondale have been able to significantly lower drag. In another nod to aesthetics the designers have partnered up with MOMO Design in Italy to create an all-new one-piece integrated handlebar found on the Hi-Mod bikes, which not only looks stunning but is super-aero thanks to its thin aero profile. According to this study, an aero water bottle can save 1.6 to 3.9 Watts compared to a normal 500mL water bottle mounted on the downtube. However, the benefits are negligible below 19mph (30km/h). The true benefits only show if you ride at 25mph (40km/h) or above.Rear – This is the original mounting position for bike fueling systems and is almost always a cage type of hydration system. This is mostly due to the fact that snaking a feeder tube along the entire length of the bike is not an efficient design. First, the RML is not that secure and is liable to send your bottles flying when you ride over rough terrain.

When it comes to frame mounted aero water bottle, XLAB once again takes our top spot, though the competition is a bit more fierce. One of the more frustrating qualities of a front mounted torpedo position hydration system is that the feeder tube never wants to stay put.
