Most volcanic soils are known as Andisols or Andosols, which comes from the Japanese words anshokudo and ando, meaning “dark coloured soil”. Andisols are light and fluffy; they contain high proportions of silicate glass and have a tendency to accumulate organic matter. As an aside, this history is not universally accepted. Some people argue that the word coffee comes from an arabic word for ‘wine’, or from a semitic word for ‘dark’. Others argue that the word ‘bun’ used in a 10th century document refers to coffee, either the bean or the tree. Both seem speculative. When it comes to roast levels, the mention of “Italian” often suggests dark, oily coffee beans that deliver big, bold flavours. The Italian Job from Rave, as the name suggests, delivers on this promise. It’s a punchy and intense coffee, with notes of dark chocolate and nuts. I buy coffee from a fair-trade cooperative. As well as adhering to fair-trade principles, they return profits from retail sales to the growers, it’s not exactly a recipe for building a large business – it’s effectively a charity. Price per kg is the same as anywhere else and quality is good – so it’s not costing anything extra to buy “ethically”. Now, I am not into poking my neighbouring countries in the eye, but the Norwegian combined knowledge about volcanoes is pretty much to be found among our Norwegian readers in here.
