About this deal

Honorable Mentions: Guerlain Shalimar Ode a la Vanille Sur la route de Madagascar, Van Cleef & Arpels Collection Extraordinaire Bois d'Iris, Bogner Bogner Woman No.1 I think vanilla is the most appealing note in perfumery; probably the world's number one flavor and I'm no exception. I love vanilla! All through my journey in the world of perfume I have worshipped almost every shade of vanilla; oriental, gourmand, powdery or spicy, there always happened to be some extra space on my shelf. It was hard and confusing to choose only one for this article! I've always love vanilla fragrances.. before the gourmand explosion was on trend I remember always get complimented for my sweet/foody/slightly androginous scents.. my favourites were and are..

For those, I'd like to put forward another Guerlain creation, one that actually manages to use Guerlain's famous vanilla accord, but in a smaller dose: Shalimar Perfume Initial. It's powdery and woody with a slight whiff of vanilla; a composition in which you can really enjoy the entire development, even if you are not a vanilla lover. The vanilla note turns out delicious without being sweet, and over time it becomes a complementary note under a dusty cloud of powdery iris. I believe this is the least sweet edition of Shalimar’s family; easier to wear with still a significant sillage. Shalimar Parfum Intial is one of those fragrances where patchouli is in love with vanilla; both notes develop softly and in harmony without deviating into plastic earthiness. Parfume Intial is a 4th generation Shalimar, approaching L'Heure Bleue in the most elegant gesture Thierry Wasser could imagine! It gets muskier, woodier and cosmetically sweet with time, after which it turns to quiet and innocent with a subtle and faint trail of vanilla that you will enjoy even if you don't tend to love vanilla. The most 'beloved' vanilla seems to be Tahitian (which is narcotically sweet and flowery) and the most brutal ones are Vanille Mexique and Givree d Antilles. Out of which the last is best adorn by me myself.

Vanilla is a climbing plant, a sort of orchid, and its most popular variant, the Vanilla planifolia, originates from Mexico. There are around a hundred of variants of this plant, but only two are used in a wide commercial production due to its taste and smell: Vanilla planifolia and Vanilla tahitiensis. The fragrance mist offers a fresh and clean yet sensual and woody scent that isn’t overpowering, regardless of the number of times you wear it. When Should You Wear It? On the other hand, some really don't enjoy vanilla based fragrances; over the years I have encountered people who found vanilla-sweet fragrances to be cheap, annoying or simply not working with their body chemistry when vanilla had the leading role. The illusion of burnt sugar and cotton candy is the culprit for the "bad reputation"; notes we have witnessed to become very popular in the sugary sweet offer of the last decade. Dzing! by L'Artisan Parfumeur was inspired by the zoo, by the sawdust and the animals, the fun and festive air that surrounds a performance, but also the comforting feel of a childhood memory. It's probably not a surprise that vanilla is so closely tied to childhood memories. Dzing! does not immediately recall vanilla, it actually smells like a cross between moving boxes, sawdust and old books, all of this sprinkled with the slightly unsettling hint of animal musk in the distance; this thing is heaving. If you look at notes you dislike and think about why, you may find yourself like myself noticing that there are just some notes that don't sit with you well; they give you a headache, or make you nauseous, and there are what I call the acquired dislikes, notes that have somehow bad associations, for whatever reason.

I just sampled Dzing and thought it was one of the worst perfumes I have ever smelled. Just weird but I will give the creator their due, it does smell like a fair/carnival scent. Just a no thank you for me. As for my favorite Vanilla's (a note I struggle with) All the vanillas I mention here are for vanilla haters. I don't think so called vanilla haters hate vanilla, what we hate is cheap, fake or linear vanilla perfumes. Or boring. Let's face it many vanilla perfumes on the market are just plain boring. What we want is depth, interest and character. Vanilla in my opinion works best when it is surrounded by rich spicy notes, lots of florals, touches of almond, patchouli, green notes and woody notes but not woody notes that are heavy. I hate vanillas that are smothered w/ coffee, citruses, sugar, marshmallows or other candy type cheap notes. Vanilla really works best IMO when it is a supporting actor if you will not the star of the show. And for the budget friendly.... Elizabeth Taylor Diamonds and Rubies. This has a lot of vanilla in the base, and I smell a lot of it when I wear it. Almond, heliotrope, peach, and red rose create a swirling effect and a beautiful haze of scent. This is a great perfume, don't let the price fool you. There is a whole House dedicated to vanilla - La maison de La Vanille which offers an entire line of approaches to vanilla for both haters and lovers. Serge Luten Un Bois Vanille is super woody, but not as woody as Derek Lam Something Wild, which is just too too woody for me. Perfumes that feature similar notes to the Victoria’s Secret Vanilla Lace body mist include: 1. Bare Vanilla by Victoria’s SecretHowever, when her mom bought her the Vanilla Lace for Christmas, she thought it smelled divine, like a slice of vanilla pudding cake! How Long Does Victoria’s Secret Vanilla Lace Last For? So, for me my dislike for vanilla was basically just in my head. I had liked vanilla without knowing it, when I wore Giorgio Armani Emporio Armani Lei, or Bogner Bogner Woman No.1. Once I realized that, with the help of the Vanilla lovers of Fragrantica.de, my rehabilitation began and I found some Vanilla fragrances, I have actually grown to love and I know my away around in the Vanilla territory, be it a Vanilla for Vanilla lovers or a Vanilla for phobics like former me.

Morn to Dusk by Eau Italia for a fresh bergamoty vanilla that still manages to be seriously foody, but smells much more expensive than most foody vanillas. If neither candy nor creamy vanilla is to your liking, and you enjoy a bit of musk and wood, might I recommend the sadly little-discussed Calvin Klein Reveal (for Women)? Completely unisex in my opinion, Reveal doesn't actually boast vanilla as a note in its olfactory pyramid but the vanilla vibe is definitely there, albeit subtly. Reveal is first and foremost a modern salt fragrance with major nuances of soft musk, sandalwood, ambergris, and a non-powdery iris. Just to keep things interesting, there's a prominent pepper note hovering at the edges and so Reveal is anything but the typical vanilla - instead, let's call it an alternative gourmand vanilla. The fragrance is not quite a powerhouse and wears more like a second skin with good longevity but quiet sillage. So those who prefer a little subtle sweetness, Reveal might be a pleasant surprise. It features notes of apple blossom, chamomile, and musk to form a soothing aroma. 2. Amber Romance by Victoria’s Secret But that's probably what a person who appreciates smells odder than the standard cake vanilla would find themselves peering into with an upturned eyebrow and a keen interest in their eye; count me among them. Dzing! isn't very easy to wear but the experience is rewarding. The fragrance is perfect for women aged 26 to 55, and the most suitable time to put it on is during casual meet-ups with your friends, or after intense workout sessions or impromptu meetings with your clients. Where Should You Wear It? Released in the 2000s, this Vanilla Lace body spray by Victoria’s Secret is classified as a soft, creamy, and powdery fragrance mist that offers a refreshing feminine touch.
