The Eightpoints is vast, home to a number of chaotic cultures, cities and nations. At its heart lies the Varanspire, a mountainous citadel feared even by Daemons. The bastion of the Everchosen himself, the Varanspire is a scale-defying monstrosity that pierces the Realm of Chaos, a vast fortress filled with winding passages, colossal mustering grounds and blood-soaked altars to the Dark Gods. Archaon alone knows the name of the Eighth Circle of the Varanguard, and no man, monster or civilisation to have felt their wrath has ever lived to tell the tale. Even amongst the Varanguard, the reputation of these ruthless warriors precedes them. When the Eighth ride out, no bodies nor ruins are left in their passing, no signs of life at all. Only dust. [2b] Ranks of the Varanguard Master As for Survivability, Archaon now has a built in 5+ ward for all damage, not just mortals. This makes him slightly more vulnerable to mortals but able to resist all damage in general. With the change to the Mark of Tzeentch he no longer has access to a 2+, Reroll 1s to save so you might want to play him a bit more cagey, even with the increase in wounds. Overall he’s still a beast and hasn’t changed in cost! Archaon is someone you have to build around as he is basically half your list in one model, but as a Warrior-Wizard with a lot of utility it’s hard to argue he doesn’t make up for it. However unlike before, there’s a lot of other good stuff that you may want to sideline him to fit more of it in. Daemon Prince The new edition is great news for every Chaos player, and we don’t think that any Slaves to Darkness or Everchosen players are going to be disappointed by the updates. The Chaos Chosen Leader, the Exalted Champion has an upgraded profile compared to the basic version, with 2″ range and access to both the Leader ability Champion of Darkness and the Chosen ability Lead the Slaughter. Overall solid choices here. Death-Dealer seems the most obvious, and Not to Be Denied will be a huge relief for Daemon Princes trying to get their unique abilities off. Artefacts Unchanged, and largely fine as is. They get a 5+ Ward if they take an objective and 6s to hit do mortals. Solid at taking points and holding them. Chaos WarriorsBurning nations and tortured peoples are reflected in the cruel helms of the Reavers of Chaos, Fourth Circle of the Varanguard and merciless pillagers of the realms. [2b] Fifth Circle While these battalions aren’t as crucial as say, the ones in Sons of Behemat (you can get along just fine with the ones in the core book) they’re good for certain kinds of lists. Grand Strategies Before a warrior may attempt to prove themselves worthy of the Varanguard, they must be summoned by a sign of Chaos. This omen can take many forms – perhaps the likeness of the Everchosen in the flames of a burning keep as its defenders scream for death, Archaon’s silhouette formed from a spray of arterial blood upon a carrion-littered battlefield, or the Everchosen’s name howled in unison by the plague-choked throats of a hundred corpses. When a warrior sees such a sign, there can be no mistaking that they have been called into Archaon’s service. [2a]

If two of the dice show the same value, they can be used to activate a Double ability. If three show the same value, they can be used for a Triple ability, and so on. Daemon Princes get their own. Not to Be Denied may be the practical, letting the General carry out a heroic action even if another has been performed this turn. If the book has one major flaw, it’s that it overburdens itself with Heroic Actions and the Daemon Prince is a particularly bad culprit. Probably an auto take with a Daemon Prince, just to get to use the abilities on his warscroll. Bolstered By Chaos is certainly…interesting, an extra 2 wounds for the General and they’re a Monster, for all that entails. Since we’re out of the first season where killing Monsters gave extra VP, this is mostly an upside, except for some matchups. Radiance of the Dark Glory turns them into a heal bot, healing nearby models 1 wound on a 3+, and 3 for Monsters. It’s fine, though probably won’t heal enough to be worth the trouble. Diabolic Majesty might be the most exciting of the bunch. The Prince must be Undivided but once per battle they can use the heroic action of any of the gods instead! These are a unique Enhancement, which we haven’t seen a lot of so far. Think like Holy Commands in the Stormcast book, you get one of these for free in your army if you have a Chaos Warrior, Chaos Knight or Chaos Chosen with a banner. There’s a total of 6, one for each mark of Chaos (including Undivided) and one for anyone to take. There are 3 different Chaos Marauder Horsemen fighter types, plus a Leader version. What they all have in common is the Mount Runemark, which means that they can’t climb terrain (they’re on horses, after all), and that they have access to the Triple ability Trampling Hooves, which lets you do damage equal to the ability’s value to an enemy within 1″ of the Horseman after making a Move action.Within the Varanspire lies the Chamber of the Vanquished – a terrifying sanctum where those kingdoms destroyed by Archaon and the Slaves to Darkness are commemorated. Amid ragged banners and screaming pillars stands a seat forged from the ossified souls of kings. This is the Empty Throne, and Archaon shall not take his place there until he has conquered the Mortal Realms – in the Everchosen’s absence, those wishing to pledge their loyalty to him do so before the Empty Throne. The Future of the Varanspire Meet the Soul Stalkers, followers of Archaon and Champions of the Dark Prince. These warriors are united in their cunning and ruthless hunting prowess. Drawn from several of the hunting tribes that seek their glory around the Varanspire, The Soul Stalkers are often sent after specific targets of key value by Archaon, where coordinated and precision strikes are required to bring their quarry down. Probably the best news about the book is how much simpler the basic traits go. Second edition Slaves to Darkness was rife with options that didn’t do anything meaningful. You no longer need to go through nested rules of Marks of Chaos, subfactions and Circles of Chaos. Just 2 rules for everyone and a subfaction to customize your force but trust me, it’s worth it. Marks of Chaos In battle, the Path to Glory translates into abilities that trigger when your fighters charge or kill their prey, leading to even more killing and slaughter. It also show in the variety of your warband: the lowest fighters are little more than armed barbarians with crude weapons, but your elite fighters, who have already gain some Chaos favor, wear ornate plate armor and terrifying Chaos axes – as well as skulls from the foes they have vanquished. Fortresses crumble and armies scatter before the charge of the Blades of Desolation, Archaon’s hell-forged hammer which he wields to break the realms asunder.
