About this deal

Author Tim Weaver is one of my favourite authors and I love the ‘David Raker’ series so have been looking forward to this one for some time. This book is a standalone novel that took me a while to get to grips with but certainly improved all the way to the very end. Well written and some excellent characters together with a gripping thought out plot. Things take a turn for the worse once they arrive at Crow Island and as the island is due to shut down for the winter the next day it all seems a bit eerie and very quiet. They must get the last ferry off the island at 5.00pm, or there is no other transport to get from the island to home, or they will have to stay overnight until the last ferry for the winter arrives the next morning. an image of Hallsands, a village on the English shore that was lost to the sea. Weave based his descriptions of Miln Cross on this village.

Kniha pro mne postrádala spád, děj se mi táhnul, měla jsem pocit, že je to nekonečný příběh. Vlastně celé mi to přišlo takové nějaké zmatené. Ano – rozporuplný a zmatený pocit po přečtení v sobě pociťuji. David Raker is an investigator who looks for missing people. He becomes involved in this case because an ex-girlfriend, Emily, asks him to look into the disappearance of her sister’s family. They have been missing for 10 months and despite a couple of earlier witness sightings the police have been unable to solve the case. In September 2015, Weaver wrote and presented an eight-part podcast series called Missing, looking into how and why people disappear. [14] It was selected by iTunes as one of the best podcasts of 2015. [15] In August 2016, Weaver recorded three further episodes. This book is a stand alone from the David Raker series, but he does make a cameo appearance towards the end

However, what should have been a simple task turned into a nightmare, as it became obvious that they had stumbled upon a murder – and the murderers! Without giving away any more of the plot, I can say that Rebekah was abandoned on the island, with little chance of escape, and with the threat of being hunted by the killers. They soon find that they are in an extremely dire predicament and are split up when a gunman comes after them.

Tim Weaver is a new author to me however when this latest book (no. 4) in the David Raker series came through the door, I was intrigued. The storyline is one that immediately grabs your attention – a whole family suddenly disappears from their home and apparently no-one knows where they are – the dinner is left cooking on the stove, wallets and phones are left behind and the dog is left wandering around the house. This time the mystery revolves around the movies. Various aspects are explored, the planning, filming, editing and the fans who collect hard to find films. As per usual the missing person vanishes for seemingly unfathomable reasons and of course they seem to just do so into thin air. Tim Weaver is a master of the crime genre. You'll be gripped by the intricate plotting and whiplash- inducing twists. I couldn't look away' GILLY MACMILLAN

Even if Rebekah can manage to survive the winter, in the spring, when the ferries resume, two men will arrive to kill her, although she has no idea why.

The portion where Jonathan invites a friend round was really cleverly done in being so sinister. I also liked his description of a tear falling and of a heart beating fast. I underlined both. For those of you who have followed the David Raker investigations in previous books ("What Remains" book 6 is an equally outstanding story with imagery of old wooden piers and the thrill and sound of Victorian amusement arcades) you will be well aware that his novels contain many facets, multiple characters with endless twists turns and surprises. We learn much of the life of Linda Korin and her marriage to the multi talented movie producer Robert Hosterlitz. Hosterlitz had been a sad and drunken individual who kept one big secret form his beautiful wife and as Raker begins to unfold the tangled layers to discover where the truth lies, his own life will be in mortal danger. Tim Weaver's love of cinema and in particular "noir" adds an authentic old Hollywood feel to the story as it progresses relentlessly in the search to find Linda before it is too late. And with his closest ally under arrest and about to reveal some truths of his own, the danger to Raker is coming from all sides . . . The perfect thriller for fans of Jo Nesbo and Michael Connelly - from the bestselling author and host of chart-topping podcast Missing.

CCTV footage captures Cate and Aiden Gascoigne driving home seconds before their car plunges into a ravine and explodes. The story was full of twists 'n' turns and I made guesses in notations the whole way through, all wrong as per usual !! This is why I read and leave others to the writing part !! I couldn't even picture homes where the steps led down to the front doors, however much I tried (that aren't basements). I did wonder about Julia's reason for hiring Raker, as he did....she was an odd bird. I hope Raker will be working with Healy in the next stories as well. He has the most filthy temper but I can't help but like him. I liked his boss lady as well. I was hooked from beginning to end. A dark, thrilling rollercoaster of a read that is not only unputdownable but has heart' Claire Douglas I was pleased to see that this book has been chosen as one of the Richard & Judy Autumn 2013 Bookclub reads.
