About this deal

I have always loved playing card games and board games, and my kids are finally getting to the age where we can have some seriously fun (and competitive) family game nights. We knew it was going to be challenging (how do you choose the best moments in history?!)so we wrote and debated guidelines before we even got started. Early on, we all agreed that we weren’t trying to make a historical game, covering significant events you might find in a history book. But instead, we wanted to create an experience. One of the things we say at Underdog Games is that we want our games to encourage curiosity, discovery, and learning. So we actively sought out unique and unfamiliar moments. What was our criteria for choosing dates to feature? Trekking Through History is a strategy game brought to you by Underdog Games (one of the biggest names in the board game industry!), and it’s designed with families in mind. To help you get a better idea of what Trekking Through History is about, here are answers to some of the common questions we’ve been getting about the game. How do you describe this game in just a sentence or two?

I enjoyed Underdog and Bink’s earlier games. They were fun, simple, highly produced games that offered a bit of education, a pretty interface, and simple mechanics, but they weren’t the kinds of puzzles I could sit and noodle over alone or with other gamers. They were family games, through and through. That’s not bad. I gave both games a Play and enjoy playing both with my family. But Trekking Through History goes above and beyond for several reasons. One thing you may have to discuss with your kids is the use of BCE for the dates in this game. We use “BC” and “AD” in our homeschool, so my kids had honestly never seen this before and it was confusing for them.

Some historical board games are easy to pair with a unit study, but this one might be tough to use in that way since it isn’t specific to one particular area of history. However, you can use Trekking Through History to spark interest in your kids. Humanity has discovered how to travel through time and visit the past. In Trekking Through History, you and your friends will go on a 3-day tour of history for the chance to see everything you’ve ever wanted. What part of history does the game cover? Desktops, Monitors, Pen drives, Hard drives, Memory cards, Computer accessories, Graphic cards, CPU, Power supplies, Motherboards, Cooling devices, TV cards & Computing Components 15 Days Returnable Well, I just added one more great game to our rotation, and I can’t wait to share about it with you. Mechanically, it’s very different. For lots of game lines, when a sequel comes out, that sequel often regurgitates the mechanics of the other games. We expressly did not want to do that for a couple of reasons. First, we want to make sure that the game honors its theme in a natural way. Second, I believe when people buy a new game, novelty and surprise is part of the pleasure. It’s fun to see different elements. The thing that unifies the games in the Trekking game is exploration, curiosity, and discovery—not specific mechanics. What makes this interesting?

What part of history does the game cover?

Whether you’re interested in ancient civilizations, medieval times, or more recent historical events. These board games provide an engaging and educational way to delve into the past.

And bonus – I can count play time easily towards our homeschool hours! Using Historical Board Games in Your Homeschool We designed it with families in mind, specifically with kids who are 10+. To ensure it would be good for all ages, we did a lot of playtesting and tweaking of mechanics and rules. Few things make me happier than being able to remove or simplify rules. Don’t get me wrong—this game still has a number of rules in it—but we did our best to make it direct as possible. To me, games with simple rules are like the poetry of the game world. Is this game just like the others in the Trekking line?Plus, the game involves time crystals – and who doesn’t love those? Playing Trekking Through History When the folks at Underdog Games asked me to take a look at Trekking Through History, I was keen, but seeing the low Weight rating on BGG (1.8 at the time of writing) made me wonder if I’d get much out of it. I am very happily surprised. I taught myself how to play with a two-handed game, which is the way I usually learn, and after just ten minutes I knew that I really liked the game, and I knew that I wanted to get other people to play. Trekking Through History isn’t nearly as sprawling as its predecessor, but it brings an entirely new experience full of interesting decisions that originates from a similar place. It’s clearly focused on engaging the family gaming experience with a rich, similar tone. The similar vibes extend to the impressive production standards—now clearly a staple with this line of games.

All you have to do is play Trekking Through History with the purpose of having fun with your family. Trust me, you’ll all learn something along the way! More Board Games from Underdog Games On your turn you choose a moment in history card from one of the board’s 6 spots. After a card is chosen, a new card is revealed and the remaining cards slide to fill in the empty spot. Both individual cards and spots on the board feature an assortment of “souvenirs” you collect on your travels. When a card is chosen, the player gains the souvenirs on the card and the bonus on that card’s space. These souvenirs are then added to your personal itinerary board. The game comes with a number of unique itinerary boards requiring a pattern of itinerary tokens to fill in sets earning players points and bonuses. As a fan of the game, one thing that stands out to me is that there are big moments in this game where you can set yourself up just right to have a really big turn. Everyone has these opportunities, so the game doesn’t get lopsided and it’s really fun to execute. I also like that this game has a lot of different angles and strategies for players to try without getting complicated. Plus, there are time crystals involved. Everyone loves the time crystals. What are the other details about the game like length, age range, etc.? That means you get to explore and help your kids learn much more history of the world than your school books cover. One of Trekking Through History’s appealing features is its simple rule set and easy accessibility.
