Cinebench is often a good predictor of our Handbrake video editing benchmark, in which we put a stopwatch on systems as they transcode a brief movie from 4K resolution down to 1080p. It, too, is a tough test for multi-core, multi-threaded CPUs; lower times are better. Despite having twice the number of P-cores, the Core i5-1240Pin the ThinkPad T16 (PL1 of 20 W) performed 25% worse in CB R15 and 40% worse in CB R23. You now have the option for the NVIDIA GeForce MX550 (an upgrade from last year's MX450) or a GeForce RTX 2050, which is a brand new addition to the ThinkPad T14.Next up is another synthetic graphics test, this time from Unigine Corp. In addition, the Intel model also offers Thunderbolt 4 and there is a SO-DIMM slot, allowing you to expand the working memory. And on the inside, you get a SODIMM slot for memory expansion, as well as one M.2 PCIe x4 slot, which fits both Gen 3 and Gen 4 SSDs. As a matter of fact, there are either 8 or 16GB of DDR4 RAM soldered to the motherboard.
The T14s teed off on the systems with Intel integrated graphics, but a gaming laptop with discrete graphics will eat its lunch. These enterprise notebooks are by no means meant for gameplay. In addition to the integrated Iris Xe Graphics G7of the processor, Lenovo also equipped our test configuration with a dedicated GeForce MX550from Nvidia with 2 GB of VRAM. The graphics card is allowed to consume a maximum of 30 watts and also offers a noticeable advantagein the benchmarks compared to the slightly outdated iGPU from Intel. However, the integrated Radeon 680M in the AMD model performs at the same level, at least in the synthetic tests. So we must already ask the question, why you would need the additional graphics card here. If you turn the laptop upside down, you will find the ventilation grills. They are quite big in this case. Respectively, the hot air gets exhausted through a vent on the right side of the machine. What we are happier with, however, is the port situation. Both inside and out. So the additional module is hardly worthwhile, and those who can make do without Thunderbolt 4 will get the better business laptop with a longer battery life if they choose the AMD version of the ThinkPad T14 G3.
On the other hand, the GeForce GPU has a slight advantage compared to the integrated Radeon 680M in the actual gaming benchmarks, but this advantage isn't really huge. I compared the benchmark performance of the ThinkPad T14s to that of four other 14-inch business notebooks, ranging from the Acer TravelMate P6 and Dell Latitude 7410 to the Asus ExpertBook B9450 and 2019's Intel-based Lenovo ThinkPad T490s.
