About this deal

Cinebench is often a good predictor of our Handbrake video editing benchmark, in which we put a stopwatch on systems as they transcode a brief movie from 4K resolution down to 1080p. It, too, is a tough test for multi-core, multi-threaded CPUs; lower times are better. Despite having twice the number of P-cores, the Core i5-1240Pin the ThinkPad T16 (PL1 of 20 W) performed 25% worse in CB R15 and 40% worse in CB R23. Even though they have the same power dissipation, the AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U in the ThinkPad T14 has a 33% lead over the processor in the T14s G3. The Ryzen 5 PRO 6650U in the EliteBook 845 G9 and ThinkPad Z13 almost have the same level of performance as the Core i5 in our review unit. WUXGA IPS (1920 x 1200), antiglare, low power, 400 nits, 100% sRGB, Eyesafe ® certified low blue light Another problem is the panel situation, but that also goes for all the models of the ThinkPad T14 G3. For example, the LG panel left a better impressionin the test than the model from AU Optronics, even though it was the 14-inch LowPower display in both cases. We already saw this panel lottery in earlier models, and you unfortunately never know in advance which panel is used.

You now have the option for the NVIDIA GeForce MX550 (an upgrade from last year's MX450) or a GeForce RTX 2050, which is a brand new addition to the ThinkPad T14.Next up is another synthetic graphics test, this time from Unigine Corp. Like 3DMark, the Superposition test renders and pans through a detailed 3D scene, this one rendered in the eponymous Unigine engine for a second opinion on the machine's graphical prowess. Looking at theThinkPad T14 G3 by itself, it is a good business laptop also with the Intel/Nvidia combination with slightly more graphics performance than the aged iGPU from Intel. Compared to the AMD version, there are a couple of advantages, such as the higher single-core performance of the Intel processor and the slightly better gaming performance of the dedicated GeForce MX550. In addition, the Intel model also offers Thunderbolt 4 and there is a SO-DIMM slot, allowing you to expand the working memory. And on the inside, you get a SODIMM slot for memory expansion, as well as one M.2 PCIe x4 slot, which fits both Gen 3 and Gen 4 SSDs. As a matter of fact, there are either 8 or 16GB of DDR4 RAM soldered to the motherboard.

The T14s teed off on the systems with Intel integrated graphics, but a gaming laptop with discrete graphics will eat its lunch. These enterprise notebooks are by no means meant for gameplay. In addition to the integrated Iris Xe Graphics G7of the processor, Lenovo also equipped our test configuration with a dedicated GeForce MX550from Nvidia with 2 GB of VRAM. The graphics card is allowed to consume a maximum of 30 watts and also offers a noticeable advantagein the benchmarks compared to the slightly outdated iGPU from Intel. However, the integrated Radeon 680M in the AMD model performs at the same level, at least in the synthetic tests. So we must already ask the question, why you would need the additional graphics card here. If you turn the laptop upside down, you will find the ventilation grills. They are quite big in this case. Respectively, the hot air gets exhausted through a vent on the right side of the machine. What we are happier with, however, is the port situation. Both inside and out. We are talking about a couple of Thunderbolt 4 connectors, two USB Type-A 3.2 (Gen. 1) ports, a LAN port, a SIM card slot, and more. measures relative graphics muscle by rendering sequences of highly detailed, gaming-style 3D graphics that emphasize particles and lighting. We run two different 3DMark subtests, Sky Diver and Fire Strike. Both are DirectX 11 benchmarks, but Sky Diver is more suited to laptops and midrange PCs, while Fire Strike is more demanding and lets high-end PCs and gaming rigs strut their stuff. The T14s simply crushed the competition in these events. Getting eight-core, 16-thread horsepower in a lightweight business notebook is still rare enough to be worth celebrating. Due to the additional graphics card, the ThinkPad T14 G3 also consumes more power, while the additional performance compared to the AMD version is very small. So the additional module is hardly worthwhile, and those who can make do without Thunderbolt 4 will get the better business laptop with a longer battery life if they choose the AMD version of the ThinkPad T14 G3.

On the other hand, the GeForce GPU has a slight advantage compared to the integrated Radeon 680M in the actual gaming benchmarks, but this advantage isn't really huge. Those who like to play a round of games on their work laptop after finishing work are significantly better served by the Schenker Vision 14and der RTX 3050 Ti, for example.Still, we’ve included other color spaces like the famous DCI-P3 standard used by movie studios, as well as the digital UHD Rec.2020 standard. Rec.2020, however, is still a thing of the future and it’s difficult for today’s displays to cover that well. We’ve also included the so-called Michael Pointer gamut, or Pointer’s gamut, which represents the colors that naturally occur around us every day.

I compared the benchmark performance of the ThinkPad T14s to that of four other 14-inch business notebooks, ranging from the Acer TravelMate P6 and Dell Latitude 7410 to the Asus ExpertBook B9450 and 2019's Intel-based Lenovo ThinkPad T490s. All had quad-core processors (all "Ice Lake" 10th Generation Core chips, apart from the older Core i5 in the T490s), making the eight-core Ryzen 7 Pro a heavy favorite in our CPU tests. You can see their basic specs in the table below. Productivity and Media Tests Battery: These systems do not support batteries that are not genuine Lenovo-made or authorised. Actual battery life may vary based on many factors, including screen brightness, active applications, features, power management settings, battery age and conditioning, and other customer preferences. he ThinkPad T14 and its predecessors have been among the most popular and best 14-inch business laptops for many years. Lenovo is now introducing an extensive redesign in the new T14 G3, including a new case that is now once again equipped with a 16:10 panel. The manufacturer continues to offer models with AMD and Intel CPUs, but the differences go a little further, the technical details of which will be revealed in the course of our review.Actual battery life may vary depending on application usage, settings, features or tasks selected, network configuration, operating temperature and many other factors. The Acer and especially the remarkable Asus are in a class by themselves, but the other three will easily last through a full workday plus an evening of hotel-room homework or streaming entertainment. No real complaints here. Ryzen Makes for a World-Class Value Our “Design and Gaming” profile delivers optimal color temperature (6500K) at 140 cd/m2 luminance and sRGB gamma mode.
