About this deal

Those who dread swapping out their bedding once the season changes should consider this medium-weight quilt. It’s airy enough to be used in the summer, and once winter rolls around, all you have to do is throw on a blanket for it to be ready for cold weather cuddling. The fill and outer layers are made entirely from Fair Trade and GOTS-certified organic cotton, so you can sleep soundly knowing that your quilt meets the strictest textile standards around. The fluffy cotton fill also allows for better air circulation, making it well-suited for hot sleepers who want the feel of medium-weight bedding without sacrificing their comfort at night. Or use those scraps to make small ‘quilt-sandwiches’ to practice your machine quilting on your own machine. What Size Batting Do You Need? Care instructions can range based on the materials and construction of your quilt, so always consult your manufacturer’s recommendations before washing your quilt. Motnyk advises to “[choose] washing machine-friendly pieces” if you know you’ll need to be laundering your quilt more frequently. Fortunately, most quilts can be machine washed and tumble-dried, but bedspreads that incorporate silk and wool typically need to be dry cleaned. When in doubt, you can always hand wash your quilt by soaking it in your tub with a mild detergent. The hand-quilted design offers textural interest while still remaining endlessly versatile. We also appreciate that there are over 20 colors available, ranging from navy to jade to crisp white. Different sizes are also available to suit almost any bed. This quilt doesn't carry any key certifications, but all things considered, we think the price is right on point.

The best tool to use would be a rotary cutter as you can press down on batting and get a straight cut. Just make sure the rotary cutter has a sharp enough blade in it. Sharp scissors are another option and should be able to keep your edges neat and clean. Another great option, the Company Store Voile Quilt has a medium weight that's more consistent with the quilts you know and love. It's made of 100 percent cotton and, as the name suggests, features a plain-woven voile-style (ultra-thin) fabric. This fabric differs from other quilting cotton types because it has an ultrasoft, airy finish. If your thread keeps breaking, it’s possible that the thread is getting caught between the end of the needle and your thimble. That pressure will weaken the thread eventually so make sure the thread is clear. The fabric and batting of this quilt are both 100 percent cotton, so it’s super soft and cozy without being overly heavy. Most sleepers will find that it has a good weight for colder nights, but if you sleep hot, you may want to opt for a cooling comforter instead. This quilt is also large enough for proper snuggling—L.L. Bean does not skimp on fabric when it comes to their bedding. Blanket hoggers will have lots of fabric to curl up in at night without leaving their partners in the cold. The right bedspread can create a luxurious sleeping experience, which is what Under The Canopy’s cotton quilt delivers. It’s made from GOTS-certified organic cotton, and its softness cannot be overstated—it’s like sleeping on a cloud. This quilt also uses a sateen weave, which brings a subtle shine to your bed. The fill, also made from organic cotton, gives it a bit of loft without being too hot or heavy, making it a good option for those looking for lightweight bedding to keep cool in the summer. The two most relevant factors in choosing from different types of batting for a quilt are Loft and Fiber LOFT Historical records show that quilted clothing was constructed for armor and protection from the elements. Researchers have discovered quilted wall hangings in the late 1300’s. Washes better without pilling. Shrinks slightly – especially if it’s 100% cotton. (This can be good or bad, depending on your personal preference. I personally like when the batting shrinks after the first wash because it softens the quilt and gives it a softer crinkly look for a more vintage appearance.) Generally softens over time and ages well. Bamboo Batting –eco-friendly, natural fiber. (Typically blended with Cotton which makes it great for breath-ability.) This Maple Leaf quilt was made with Bamboo Blend batting and the texture of the quilting as well as the drape of the quilt are amazing, even for a quilt that is densely-machine-quilted.

Anki Spets, bedding designer and founder of Area Home, is partial to cotton or linen quilts. However, she says, "Any stable material will work so long as it can handle the stitching and keep the fill in place." Weight Some quilters refuse to hand quilt because they think that working with a small needle would prove too difficult. A lot has changed since the days when quilters only used “between needles”.If your thread is tangling or twisting on itself, first make sure that you are starting with a length of thread no more than about 18″ long.

Duvets are “made of two components, the duvet cover, and the duvet insert.” The insert is typically made from down, feathers, or synthetic materials and is known for being fluffy and warm. The insert is encased in a shell, which is made from fabric like cotton. Duvets “lay atop all bedding and offer the most warmth,” making them best suited for colder climates. If you have seen a quilt in a museum that has tiny stitches keep in mind that these were often crafted by young girls with nimble fingers. Quilts are weighed in grams per square meter (GSM) and come in three weights: light, medium, and heavy. Motnyk says “the higher the GSM of filling in the quilt, the warmer it is.” According to her expertise, a lightweight quilt is around 200 GSM and is best suited for summer use. A medium-weight quilt will be around 300 GSM, which is perfect for autumn or spring weather. A heavy-weight quilt is typically 500 GSM and will keep you warm in the winter. Polyester is a human-made, affordable fabric that’s easy to wash and care for. However, it traps in more heat, so it’s better suited for cold sleepers. Polyester is also commonly used for quilt batting as it drapes nicely, has a nice loft, and holds up over time for a long-lasting quilt. If you have a special quilt that you want to invest in, I think batting is an important thing to consider. I always recommend 100% wool if you want to “show off” the quilting. I mostly recommend this for custom quilting because it really makes the quilting POP!This is a great choice if you plan to display or enter a quilt into a show. We use Quilters Dream 100% Wool. I have tested it in many of my personal quilts and it washes and wears well. Parachute’s Cloud Cotton Quilt is the perfect companion for cooler evenings. Made entirely with long-staple Turkish cotton, it feels uber soft and snuggly against your skin—and, the longer cotton fibers mean that the fabric is less prone to pilling and breakage than shorter ones. It’s filled with polyester, which helps keep you toasty warm, and has a heavier weight that means it can totally replace your comforter. Be careful when choosing patterns that have long straight lines. Although they are easy to quilt with a running stitch, any stitches that are crooked are easily seen. Out of all the lightweight quilts we looked at, this cotton quilt from Quince stood out for its weightless quality and use of cotton voile. Cotton voile, which is a lightweight and gauzy version of cotton, brings cloudlike comfort to any bed. This type of cotton is also more breathable, allowing air to circulate throughout your bedding so you won’t overheat in the middle of the night. It has a supremely soft touch that is amazing to curl up with, particularly in the winter reading a great book. The lighter fabric is more prone to snags and tears though, so it’s not the best choice if you have pets or rowdy kids.

You'll also want to consider the weight of a quilt's material in addition to the type. As a multi-layered bed cover with a batting-style fill, quilts are somewhat flat with a drapey quality. They're often slightly heavier than down-filled comforters, but this isn't always the case. West Elm's Tencel quilt is best suited for hot sleepers or people living in warmer climates. You can pair it with a duvet or blanket for more warmth, but you may not like its cool touch if you run cold at night. Tencel also has a sheen, so you may want a cotton or linen quilt if you prefer matte bedding. But for those who like to be as cool as a cucumber in their sleep, this quilt will keep you at a perfect temperature throughout the night. Then you make your squares like you normally would. If you are a beginner, you can get one of those quilting kits that have your material pre-cut and other supplies you will need. it will also have a pattern for you to follow. Cotton blend batting (usually 80% cotton/20% polyester). Very similar to the cotton option, but a cotton poly blend is less-expensive and doesn’t shrink as much. Good for machine quilting. This is what I use most often. This quilt is filled with cotton and uses box stitching to create a clean pattern on your bedding, which gives it a lightweight feel. The outer lining is microfiber, a soft and durable material that’s less prone to wrinkles but traps in more heat than cotton or linen. With this in mind, we recommend that hot sleepers consider other quilts, as they may find this one too warm, especially during the summer.
