About this deal

As the narrative unfolds, readers are completely drawn to the parallel stories. Laced with secrets and lies, THE OTHER GUEST is a potpourri of tension, red herrings and clues to please anyone’s appetite for the suspense of a well-plotted mystery novel. The connection between Joanna and Leah comes late in the story, but it’s a welcome surprise. The prose is finely honed, and the characters are fully formed. Each one is given a healthy inner life, as a well as interesting and gripping outer experiences. Readers will find themselves immersed in the plot and will be eager to find the answers to the mysteries that arise. After several failed IVF attempts Laila and her husband James decided to take a break to a luxury island resort in Ixos in Greece. They use the money saved from their treatment to get away and recharge and rekindle their relationship, as the couple’s relationship is currently strained. Told in two separate story lines as well as a scattering of Amy’s experiences in the days leading up to her death, I was baffled for awhile how they could be connected, but was impressed with the plot when it finally dawned on me. The characters were deep, well-rounded and each had their own voice. With the overlying themes of guilt, familial loyalty and transformation, Helen Cooper did a magnificent job describing the passion of loss and the guilt that can overwhelm a person. The only thing I didn’t quite like was how things were left at the very end, but overall I highly enjoyed it and finished it in one day. Rating of 4.5 stars.

Guest stars: Pete Davidson, Lisa Rinna, Tipper Newton, Izzy Diaz, Matthew Willig, and Lexi Ainsworth This rip-roaring story of tantalising complexity is set both in England and Italy and covers misplaced love, an unexplained death and a possible murder. It also has a set of characters of such interest that the book becomes an intoxicating read.Metcalf, Mitch (October 31, 2018). What's up with this guy though, does he have an ulterior motive for wanting to be close to Joanna? A] heart-pounding debut…Even avid suspense readers won’t be able to predict all the twists. Laced with secrets and lies, THE OTHER GUEST is a potpourri of tension, red herrings and clues to please anyone’s appetite for the suspense of a well-plotted mystery novel." Each chapter is headed by the name of a character in the book and covers a part of the story that applies specifically to that character. It is not an unknown feature, and is normally one which I dislike, as the reader has to reassemble the character’s place in the story before they can begin to read on. But it’s a small niggle amid a small hiatus, which happily does not diminish the clever plot of this fascinating novel. “Extremely addictive” It is a lot to live up to. When the missteps are never discussed, every descendent is completely unprepared for things to go wrong. The shield of their grandfather is buried with him. Bad things are simply not supposed to happen to a Milton. There’s a stunning scene toward the beginning of Sarah Blake’s new novel, “The Guest Book,” that follows a wealthy young mother gliding around New York and then to her elegant mansion in a charmingly choreographed dance of delight that ends with her 5-year-old son falling from a window to his death. The book starts quite well with a good atmosphere created by the weather in coastal town and there is a distinct whiff of something very off and possibly rotten in the guest house with the Jeffrey’s strange behaviour adding to the strange vibe. You sense there is a story there and there are more unsettling off notes. It’s easy to read, there are some moments of tension, the occasional chill and a cloak of secrecy. This is a bit of a slow burn, as things deliberately unfold and just as one timeline/storyline gets exciting, then we switch over to another. Overall, I liked the book and the plot. There are some instances that are very far fetched, but others are intriguing and interesting and kept me invested to find out what was going on. I liked Joanna, but I didn't really like Leah or any of the other characters. I loved the premise of two women who don't seem to be connected, but ultimately get entangled in some dangerous situations that reveal their connection.
