About this deal

The colour is very deep gold with a hint of amber. The nose has an immediate rich, sweet and robust feel to it with aromas of brown sugar, sultana and oat biscuits evident. Then come further aromas of caramel and butterscotch. These are underpinned by some candied orange peel and hints of hazelnut praline and juicy tropical fruits.

Full disclosure: the sample featured in this review came in an advent calendar that I was given for free. As always, I will strive to give an honest opinion on the quality of the dram and the value for money it represents. Nose: Notes of orange zest and dark caramel, as well as a touch of cherry candy cane and clementine. Just a whisper of damp oak, accompanied by cocoa powder. Quite lovely indeed. In the mouth: Follows on from the nose, layers of sherry and lighter creamy notes. Fruitcake, vanilla icing, and some summer fruits too. Well balanced and smooth, very good for an entry level whisky, and well-priced. Score: 6/10

These experiences have honed my palate and provided me with a profound understanding of the vast world of spirits.

Smell: Nuts and dried fruits. Raisins. Sultanas. Walnuts. Crunchie bars – chocolate and honeycomb. Runny honey. A wee charcoal note in there too. Orange peel. Some dark chocolate now. Some dusty malt under the sherry casks.

User Notes about the Distillery

Whiskybase B.V. is the Dutch private limited liability company, having its statutory seat in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and its office at Zwaanshals 530, 3035 KS Rotterdam, The Netherlands. Whiskybase B.V. is registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under no. 52072819. My journey into the world of spirits began as a pub owner, where I cultivated memorable experiences for patrons and nurtured a deep appreciation for fine liquors. Something I discovered while researching this bottle, which I found worth sharing, is their barley malting process. Tamdhu uses a mechanical Saladin box to malt their grain. Essentially, instead of having a large open room for malting their grain, Tamdhu uses a large rectangular container with screws to rotate the grain. The Saladin process is designed to solve a problem in which the malting of barley would become entangled if it wasn’t regularly turned over by hand. The taste is a well-balanced blend of vanilla, dried fruit, prune, a subtle touch of oak, and a hint of spicy ginger and nutmeg. The distillery as it is presently known was resurrected in 2013. Ian MacLeod Distillers currently owns the facility and it is a primary supplier of Scotch to The Famous Grouse, J&B and Cutty Sark blended Scotch brands.

Here, I’ve immersed myself in the art of crafting Mezcal, gaining a newfound appreciation for the craftsmanship that goes into distilling this ancient spirit. Apart from the 12 Year Old, prices are at the top end of what I would want to pay, particularly for the Batch Strength, but the argument from Tamdhu is that the best casks cost more money, and they’re not going to start cutting corners in any of their processes just to bring the price down. On this showing, I’m not going to argue with them. It was in 1863 that the Strathspey railway first graced Speyside’s locality. A dependable means of travel was, at last, brought to the area and several distilleries were built as a result. Tamdhu was one of them; founded in 1896 by a group of whisky blenders, including William Grant and Sons among others, and designed by the famed, prolific Speyside distillery architect, Charles Doig of Elgin.

It is easily one of the best 12-year-old single malts on the market and is sure to be entirely enjoyable for any sherry whisky aficionado. Since being bought by Ian MacLeod in 2010 the distillery has made quite the transformation. From a producer that was far from a frontline player to a whisky that’s now highly regarded for its sherry maturation. Indeed there’s much to like about modern day Tamdhu.
