STEM APPLICATIONS: Stewart/Clegg/Watson answers the question, "When will I use this?" by showing how Calculus is used as a problem-solving tool in fields such as physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, medicine, and the social sciences. This work needs to be declared, standard in High-school Mathematics. If you desire a career in Engineering, Mathematics, Scientists, Architecture.

During my first semester of calculus I discovered Paul's Online Math Notes, which is a resource that is kept by a professor at Lamar University. It is free and I think he made it initially for his classes, but he has most of the same information as the textbook and I found his explanations to be much more clear and concise. Very helpful. Calculus (Guichard) This general calculus book covers a fairly standard course sequence: single variable calculus, infinite series, and multivariable calculus. Areas Between Curves. Applied Project: The Gini Index. Volumes. Volumes by Cylindrical Shells. Work. Average Value of a Function. Applied Project: Calculus and Baseball. Review. Problems Plus. Supplemental Modules (Calculus) Calculus is a branch of mathematics focused on limits, functions, derivatives, integrals, and infinite series. Calculus has two primary branches: differential calculus and integral calculus. Multivariable calculus is the extension of calculus in one variable to functions of several variables. Vector calculus is a branch of mathematics concerned with differentiation and integration of vector fields. Despite these gripes, it got the job done and I have seen much worse textbooks. Like I previously stated, when it works, it works well. Using alternative resources together with it made my experience much, much better. I'm attending a university and we are using a textbook from another author (Calculus 2nd Edition by Briggs, Cochran, and Gillet). The book I am using for school that is required is not that great because it is written as if you know your math pretty well. What I mean is, you are suppose to know formulas you might have not seen before. With Stewart he explains where you get the formulas from.Four Ways to Represent a Function. Mathematical Models: A Catalog of Essential Functions. New Functions from Old Functions. The Tangent and Velocity Problems. The Limit of a Function. Calculating Limits Using the Limit Laws. The Precise Definition of a Limit. Continuity. Review. Principles of Problem Solving. Daniel Clegg received his B.A. in Mathematics from California State University, Fullerton and his M.A. in Mathematics from UCLA. He is currently a professor of mathematics at Palomar College near San Diego, California, where he has taught for more than 20 years. Clegg co-authored BRIEF APPLIED CALCULUS with James Stewart and also assisted Stewart with various aspects of his calculus texts and ancillaries for almost 20 years. CLP-4 Vector Calculus (Feldman, Rechnitzer, and Yeager) This textbook covers Vector Calculus. There are chapters on curves, vector fields, surface integrals and integral theorems (such as the divergence theorem). Sequences. Discovery Project: Logistic Sequences. Series. The Integral Test and Estimates of Sums. The Comparison Tests. Alternating Series and Absolute Convergence. The Ratio and Root Tests. Strategy for Testing Series. Power Series. Representations of Functions as Power Series. Taylor and Maclaurin Series. Discovery Project: An Elusive Limit. Writing Project: How Newton Discovered the Binomial Series. Applications of Taylor Polynomials. Applied Project: Radiation from the Stars. Review. Problems Plus. Arc Length. Discovery Project: Arc Length Contest. Area of a Surface of Revolution. Discovery Project: Rotating on a Slant. Applications to Physics and Engineering. Discovery Project: Complementary Coffee Cups. Applications to Economics and Biology. Probability. Review. Problems Plus.

CLP-1 Differential Calculus (Feldman, Rechnitzer, and Yeager) This textbook covers single variable Differential Calculus. More challenging exercises called "Problems Plus" follow the end-of-chapter exercises. These sections reinforce concepts by requiring students to apply techniques from more than one chapter of the text, and by patiently showing them how to approach a challenging problem. Differential Calculus for the Life Sciences (Edelstein-Keshet) Calculus arose as a tool for solving practical scientific problems through the centuries. However, it is often taught as a technical subject with rules and formulas (and occasionally theorems), devoid of its connection to applications. In this course, the applications form an important focal point, with emphasis on life sciences. This places the techniques and concepts into practical context, as well as motivating quantitative approaches to biology taught to undergraduates.

Modeling with Differential Equations. Direction Fields and Euler’s Method. Separable Equations. Applied Project: How Fast Does a Tank Drain? Models for Population Growth. Linear Equations. Applied Project: Which Is Faster, Going Up or Coming Down? Predator-Prey Systems. Review. Problems Plus. PROBLEM-SOLVING EMPHASIS: George Polya’s problem-solving methodology is introduced at the beginning and reinforced throughout. "Strategies" sections help students select what techniques they'll need to solve problems in situations where the choice is not obvious and help them develop true problem-solving skills and intuition. This is equal to antiderivative on boundary of domain.

QUALITY EXERCISES: With over 8000 exercises in all, each exercise set carefully progresses from skill-development problems to more challenging problems involving applications and proofs. Conceptual exercises encourage the development of communication skills by explicitly requesting descriptions, conjectures, and explanations. More challenging “Problems Plus” exercises reinforce concepts by requiring students to apply techniques from more than one chapter of the text, and by patiently showing them how to approach a challenging problem. Curves Defined by Parametric Equations. Discovery Project: Running Circles Around Circles. Calculus with Parametric Curves. Discovery Project: Bézier Curves. Polar Coordinates. Discovery Project: Families of Polar Curves. Calculus in Polar Coordinates. Conic Sections. Conic Sections in Polar Coordinates. Review. Problems Plus. Stewart's writing style speaks clearly and directly to students, guiding them through key ideas, theorems, and problem-solving steps, and encouraging them to think as they read and learn calculus.

The Calculus of Functions of Several Variables (Sloughter) This textbook corresponds with a 300-level mathematics course taught at Furman University. Students should have completed four semesters of college level calculus prior to attempting this course.
