About this deal

Same excellent sharpness in the centre. Corners are better than at medium distance with good corners wide open instead of average at medium distance (2m) When it comes to close-up image quality the Samyang is not sharp close-up wide open in the center and you need to close to at least f/4 for decent results.

With its effective focal length of 85mm, the Panasonic is ideal for portraiture and the f/1.7 aperture enables a fairly tight depth of field. It’s well-engineered and features an optical image stabilizer. The main reason for the Art lens’s weight gain is that it has a much more complex and sophisticated optical path than its predecessor, based on 13 rather than eight elements. These include one complex aspherical element and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) elements. In the center of the frame, the Samyang is fairly sharp even wide open with maybe a little improvement in contrast to closing down. Built for enhanced usability, a custom switch can be set to allow for adjustment of the aperture by rotating the focus ring. Samyang has taken on board hands-on experience from photographers and videographers to increase the usability of this lens. The custom switch can be set to your preferences. Use the optical lens station to set a mode to suit you. The pictures with the plants around the outside light, were they with silent shutter? I think he also mentions in his video that the auto focus of the samyang II was a bit better than the clunky AF of the zeiss planar. Having owned both the 45/1.8 and the 50/1.4 II, I too can attest that as far as bokeh and rendering is concerned, there is no contest. Nonetheless, I totally agree with your last post that costing 1/3 the price of the 50/1.2 GM, this is quite a bargain on account of overall performance, as is the case with many Samyang AF lenses. Such exciting times for us E Mount users, it's great to have choice especially affordable and good value ones.

Would be very interested in a LoCA / bokeh comparison with the 45mm F1.8 if you still have that lens (I actually consider the 45mm a lens that renders nicely).Samyang AF 50mm F1.4 FE II sharpness close up test – top left f/1.4, top right f/2, bottom left f/2.8, bottom right f/4 I stand by my previous conclusions that the Samyang 50/1.4 II should a strong contender for anyone considering a fast 50mm prime that is extremely lightweight for its class, offers superb rendering for portraiture, and seriously good value. However, I would say the biggest difference vs the GM is in wide-open AF accuracy, which matters a lot to me. ... Show more→ However, Korean lens maker Samyang has stepped up to the plate with its first autofocus lenses: the AF 50mm f/1.4 FE , AF 14mm f/1.8 FE wide-angle and, most recently, the AF 35mm f/2.8 FE. As you probably already guessed, Samyang 50/F1.4 II renders color more towards warm side. Some people gonna love it, some not so much - personal preference and it's easy to adjust in post. I find it pleasing especially with the lens bokeh (more on that later). To give you a comparison take a look below (fun fact Samyang 45/F1.8 has even stronger vignette at F1.8 than new S50 at F1.4):

Our Image Engineering MTF tests reveal a lens that’s a little soft wide open, but that sharpens up dramatically on stopping down. The corners of the frame lag behind the centre for sharpness, but inspection of our test shots reveals that this reflects some curvature of field, with the corners being slightly out of focus in our test chart shots. Overall, the best results are obtained at f/5.6-f/8. Samyang AF 50mm F1.4 FE – Distortion Slowly turn the zoom ring to the left (towards the wide-angle end) while using your upper body and arms to move the camera toward your subject. The lens has a metal rather than plastic mounting plate, and a better-rounded aperture based on seven diaphragm blades instead of just five. Le nouveau Samyang 50mm F1.4 AF II est 4eme avec un centre excellent mais des coins plus faibles. Il est nettement au dessus du Samyang V1. Le Sigma 50mm F/1.4 DG HSM Art est d’un niveau similaire Quand on ferme l’ouverture, les ronds de bokeh du Samyang V2 deviennent moins bons car ils ne sont plus circulaires dès F2.8Chromatic aberration is the lens' inability to focus on the sensor or film all colours of visible light at the same point. Severe chromatic aberration gives a noticeable fringing or a halo effect around sharp edges within the picture. It can be cured in software. In the corners, however, is where we see a huge difference with the Sony-Zeiss producing a pretty poor result up to about f/5.6 – this lens really shows its age here. More functions will be added through firmware updates in the future Short Minimum Focusing Distance Announced in late 2021, the Samyang second-generation full-frame 50mm f/1.4 E-mount lens is smaller and lighter than the first generation and comes with several design improvements including weather sealing and new controls as well as an improved AF motor.

Using the electronic first curtain shutter at large apertures and high speeds results in ugly bokeh. Sony Alpha A7R IV, Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art, 1/6400sec at f/1.4, ISO 100. Image credit: Andy Westlake The autofocus can struggle with small, off-centre, close-up subjects; here I resorted to manual focus instead Originally a manual focus lens specialist, Samyang expanded its line-up to include autofocus models in 2016, with the AF 50mm F1.4 FE and AF 14mm F2.8 FE, whilst celebrating its 45th anniversary. After 5 years of in-depth research and communication with customers, Samyang is now meeting the demands of more photographers by launching the AF 50mm F1.4 FE II (second edition). All photos are RAW converted to JPG and downsized with the exception of the sample shots at the end of the review which are edited to taste There are a wide variety of designs available at various price points, but the Samyang does look very good value, especially considering its excellent standard of performance.
