About this deal

Asexual spores (conidia) of the g rey mouldfungus are always present in the air. They require leaf wetness or very high humidity to germinate and infect. Damaged or senescent plant parts are a very common way in which the fungus gains entry to the plant. The disease has a huge host range, and is active over a wide temperature range. Galls should be removed promptly before the fungus sporulates (the white stage when the spores are released and the disease can spread) Prolonged leaf wetness is not required for infection by p owdery mildew, but high humidity is, so providing good air circulation is still important. Avoid drought stress and the overuse of nitrogenous fertilisers. Chemical control

Avoid overhead watering as this increases humidity around the foliage, which makes the plants more prone to powdery and downy mildews

Garden Ready Plugs

Powdery mildew: the powdery mildew fungus over-winters in the buds and when these start to growin the spring it produces airborne spores which spread the disease. The pathogen originated in north America, but is now present wherever vines are grown. Leaf infection reduces plant vigour. When fruits are infected they split as they expand and this allows secondary infection by grey mould ( Botrytis cinerea).

There are no fungicides available to amateur gardeners with activity against downy mildewor grey mould. Provide good drainage, but water regularly during dry periods (plants suffering from regular but intermittent drought-stress are more susceptible). Application of mulch may help water retention The RHS believes that avoiding pests, diseases and weeds by good practice in cultivation methods, cultivarselection, garden hygiene and encouraging or introducing natural enemies, should be the first line of control. If chemical controls are used, they should be used only in a minimal and highly targeted manner. Non-chemical control Suttons strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.

RHS Bug & Mildew Control Concentrate

Clean up and destroy fallen leaves to reduce the amount of the downy mildew pathogen surviving the winter Do not over-fertilise (especially not too much nitrogen) as succulent growth is particularly susceptible

The best time for spraying is in late spring and early autumn when the more vulnerable newly hatched scale nymphs are present Sometimes growth of the powdery mildew fungus is sparse and the symptom is a grey or purplish discolouration of the leaves On evergreen rhododendrons, actual growth of the funguson the lower leaf surface can be hard to detect, but infection tends to cause pale green,reddish-purpleor yellowish patches on the upper surface Powdery mildew or leaf spots: leaf removal is not recommended as it would cause severe defoliation. Unless very severe, these infections should be toleratedTheproducts above also have recommendations for control of powdery mildew, as do products containing sulphur(Fungus Clear Ultra 2, Mildew Clear for Edibles, Roseclear 3-in-1 action (with fatty acids)). Badly affected shoots are best prunedout and disposed of as soon as the symptoms are seen. During routine spring pruning any shoots showing large patches of mildew around the thorns should also be cut out Where you cannot tolerate soft scale, manage them using the information above as your first course of action. Edibles:Tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (ProvantoFungus Fighter Plus) can be used on glasshouse crops of cucumber, courgette and summer squash. Sulphur (Mildew Clear for Edibles) can be used on grapevines, gooseberries, cucumbers, peas and a wide range of root and tuber vegetables (full details on label). Plant invigorators combine nutrients to stimulate plant growth with surfactants or fatty acids that have a physical mode of action (e.g. Ecofective Bug Control, RHS Bug and Mildew Control and SB Plant Invigorator). These are not considered organic.
