The sex symbolism of this story is interesting to be sure, but the message that really intrigues me is about motherhood. We have three different mothers in this story: Rapunzel’s biological mother who loses her baby for eating the rampion. The witch mother who attempts to hide her ward away and loses her daughter to a lover anyway. Then Rapunzel herself who raises her children in isolation and despair. You know... "rise of the brave tangled dragons", "the big four", and all that. But a rose by any other name is just as sweet. Doesn’t it mean you’ve got to earn it?” Gothel asked. “Yes, Rapunzel. Feeling good without earning it is bad. And I don’t like bad girls.” What are you going to do, mom?” Rapunzel asked, trembling because she felt the toy poking her asshole. For another, the mother’s craving for rampion (or ‘rapunzel’) in the witch’s garden is ripe with sexual symbolism, suggesting a woman who is unable to control her lustful desires: her ‘appetite’ for the stuff leads her to nag her husband into agreeing to trespass into the forbidden garden, in a none-too-subtle echo of the Adam and Eve story (it’s all there: the garden, the man and woman, the forbidden zone, the inexplicable hankering for fresh produce).
