About this deal

That’s when Pauwel, whose inn, the De Hoorn, was located in a strategic area between Mechelen and Gent, came up with the idea of designing a glass -the koetsiersglas – that could be fitted in the carriage’s structure. And yes, that’s the very same design from which you are enjoying your Kwak beer today! All About The Recipe… Upon taking a sip you’ll find yourself enjoying a delightful array of flavours. First, the caramel and sugar will mingle with the fruit to give you a fresh sip. Next you’ll notice the hints of licorice and banana playing through your palette, followed by the added zest of apple and orange, and rounded out by a warming hint of spicy Belgian yeast and the sweetness of cookie dough. If you’re looking for something to challenge your tastebuds, explore the world of Belgian sour beers – specifically lambic beers. Lambic beers are only made in the Brussels area, and these brews are regarded by many as the champagne of the beer world – carefully aged and blended to produce a complex, sour and often funky brew. Pauwel Kwak has earthy aromas, a malty character with touches of liquorice, a nougat-like robustness and a warm finish not unlike caramelised banana. Yeast and red fruits are the strongest aromas, but you will also find a few herbs.

A perfect blend of traditional and modern, Kwak effortlessly offers up a taste profile that almost everyone would enjoy. Cask beer, also known as Real Ale, is Britain’s National drink and what makes it unique is its freshness – brewed to be served fresh ands hand-pulled from chilled pub cellars in a few days. The brewers of this truly exceptional beer (Bosteels, in case you were wondering) haven’t changed or adapted ingredients, leaving a beer that can safely say it has been popular for the ages. What makes the Great British pub so unique is delicious, fresh cask beer. It’s a drink you can only enjoy in the pub and which millions of people across the UK have not been able to enjoy for much of the last twelve months. So when pubs reopen next week I’d like to invite you to join me in making our first pint down the pub a fresh cask beer from a local brewery, you’ll not only get a great tasting beer but you’ll be supporting local independent breweries and our struggling pub-industry.” Tom Stainer, Chief Executive CAMRA Dubbels and Quadrupels tend to use caramelised malts and have a rich, fruity flavour. They tend to be lightly hopped, allowing the malt to shine through. However, Tripel ales tend to be made with paler malts and more robustly hopped for a fruity yet pleasantly bitter beer with a bold flavour – try this if you’re a fan of an American Pale ale or IPA. Although Pauwel Kwak laid the solid foundation for the beer we know today, the recipe has changed throughout the years.

Bottled 5/11/2020, so ~9 1/2 months after the 2yr BB suggestion . Let warm to almost room temperature [58F, +/-] Though it's old, by the brewer's standard, still quite good. I'd like to try one fresh for comparison,. The creators of Kwak beer have not shied away from adding a hint of something different. While some focus on a sweet caramel aroma, others have been infused with banana to give an extra something. For example, did you know that cask beer is more often than not, the freshest drink on the bar? Did you know that it’s actually a live product? Did you know it’s one of the most sustainable forms of beer? These are just a few of the benefits of cask beer that make it so special and something that we should be aiming to protect. DeuS Brut des Flandres is a unique brew that was introduced to the world in 2002. It is a sparkling, honest and pure beer created with just water, yeast, malt and hops. The carefully selected yeast cultures add a mild taste of gin ... It wasn’t until 1980 when Brouwerij Bosteels acquired this beer, that Kwak became known to the general public and gained its distinctive taste and characteristics. In the 18th century there was a very well-known brewer in the Dendermonde area; his name was Pauwel Kwak. He brewed his own beer, which was dark and heavy. He also has had a coaching inn on the road between Mechelen and Gent, where the mail coaches used to stop for a break. This story inspired a brewer from nearby Buggenhout and since the 1980s the Pauwel Kwak is brewed by Brouwerij Bosteels, which also produces the popular Tripel Karmeliet and the DeuS Brut des Flandres.

If you’re looking for something heavy to fulfil your taste buds, there’s just about nothing else we would recommend than this beer. From the esteemed Bosteel Brewery, what makes a Pauwel Kwak what it is today is, of course, the recipe. Being a top-fermented beer, it has a surprisingly strong ABV (8.4%!) and it’s generally recognisable thanks to its notes of liquorice and spices. Pauwel Kwak Beer is a Belgian strong ale brought to you by Brouweril Bosteels, the brewery that produces the incredibly popular Tripel Karmeliet and Deus Brut des Flandres. Their high quality beers are a result of years of practice and a bit of inspiration from the right places.

Not only is the Kwak beer delicious, but its glass makes an interesting talking point too! It looks like a mini-yard of ale and due to having a rounded bottom, comes with a wooden stand. Apparently Pauwel Kwak designed the glass during the 19th century for coachmen who wanted a drink but couldn’t leave their coach, although it wasn’t launched until the 1980s.
