About this deal

Discover full content of this calendar in CALENDAR CONTAINS tab Where to buy this advent calendar : With five years’ experience as a homes writer, Charley now writes for Good Housekeeping, Country Living and House Beautiful but has also previously worked in print for an architecture magazine. Right now, it feels as though every week another core British institution disappears from our high streets. You can keep up with all the planned closures here.

This isn’t the first time Paperchase’s future has been in jeopardy. Founded in 1968 by two art students, it went through insolvency proceedings four years ago and closed some of its shops to cut costs. Another 30-odd, including the huge flagship in Tottenham Court Road, London, did not reopen after the pandemic. Now all its shops are expected to close, although the brand’s pens and notebooks will live on in Tesco supermarkets. Tesco has bought the Paperchase brand, but its shops will be closing (Photo: Peter Nicholls/Reuters) For me as a teenager, this shop felt like the height of sophistication. The shop sold a large assortment of stationery that no one needed but everyone wanted, from shimmering notebooks to pencils with oversized rubbers on the end, all somehow cooler than those to be found at Scribbler. Then there were the Christmas cards with moustaches on. Every Christmas, my older sister would impress the family by bringing home a selection of these cards, all the way from Leeds. Now that it's officially exam season, students across the UK will be sitting down to revise all kinds of course content. Sure, it can be a daunting and stressful task at times, but half the battle is discovering which revision methods work best for you, and what stationery you'll need to get the job done. I’m working on finding eco-friendly printer ink, so I’ll be sure to update this article when I find some that I recommend. We bought it last year and had mixed feelings about the content. The quality was fantastic but we were a bit disappointed with the inclusion of wrapping paper, gift tags, Christmas cards and ribbon. While Paperchase’s flower-shaped rubbers might not be widely missed, its cards certainly will be. “The quality of the cards it sold was extremely high, although it was very expensive for a silly little birthday card,” says Lucy Shearer, 27. “But I feel like if you needed a last-minute one you could rely on Paperchase to have exactly what you needed.”

Whether you are taking notes in a meeting, working out problems, or sketching down ideas, the Wipebook is a great solution for an eco-friendly home office. Once you’ve typed up your notes, simply erase them and start again, without any waste. Where would you go to get a birthday card that was nice, and not obviously grabbed from a Sainsbury’s Local? The answer is, or rather was, Paperchase. Its selection of quirky cards and stationery items lined train stations and highstreets across the UK. Charley has an MA in Journalism & Media Studies and undertook an internship at a travel magazine in Iceland. She still writes occasional travel and lifestyle stories when the inspiration strikes now, with work published in Cosmopolitan, Stylist, ELLE and Women’s Health, among others.Scented pens, novelty rubbers, rainbow highlighters and another adorable patterned notebook that will never be filled? Yes please. There’s a different kind of dopamine hit that comes from purchasing new stationery. That’s why it felt like such a big loss when it seemed like beloved stationery store Paperchase could disappear from our high streets altogether.
