About this deal

Jones, Kenneth (16 February 2012). "Full Cast of Broadway's One Man, Two Guvnors Announced; Many Original Cast Members Cross Pond". Playbill. Great Performances: One Man, Two Guvnors is a National Theatre production, produced by David Sabel and directed for the screen by Robin Lough. Play by Richard Bean, based on “The Servant of Two Masters” by Carlo Goldoni, with songs by Grant Olding, directed for the stage by Nicholas Hytner. Great Performances is produced by THIRTEEN Productions LLC for WNET. Bill O’Donnell is series producer and David Horn is executive producer. One Man, Two Guvnors is a play by Richard Bean, an English adaptation of Servant of Two Masters ( Italian: Il servitore di due padroni), a 1743 Commedia dell'arte style comedy play by the Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. The play replaces the Italian period setting of the original with Brighton in 1963. [1] The play opened at the National Theatre in 2011, toured in the UK and then opened in the West End in November 2011, with a subsequent Broadway opening in April 2012. The second tour was launched six months later, playing the UK, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. The second UK production in London closed in March 2014, before a third tour of the UK began in May 2014.

But Bean has dispensed with the period Italian setting and relocated the action to Brighton in 1963, with many of the characters now members of the criminal underworld of that splendidly louche seaside town. Following its engagement at the National in London, the play began its first national tour of UK prior to a West End engagement in the Autumn. Stops included Aylesbury Waterside Theatre (27 September–1 October), Plymouth Theatre Royal (4–8 October), The Lowry, Salford (11–15 October), Birmingham's New Alexandra Theatre (18–22 October) and the King's Theatre in Edinburgh (25–29 October). The play, a Carlo Goldoni adaptation directed by Nicholas Hytner and written by Richard Bean, starred James Corden, then best known for writing and acting in the BBC comedy Gavin and Stacey. It first ran at the National in 2011, before transferring to the West End.Taylor, Paul (26 May 2011). " 'One Man, Two Guvnors', National Theatre: Lyttelton, London". The Independent. So there I am, middle of Victoria Station, I’ve only been playing ten minutes, this lairy bloke comes over, he says – ‘do you do requests?’ I wonder if any cast member has ever refused to deliver a Bean line on ideological grounds. The playwright says that there has never been a boycott, but one Asian actor did refuse a role in England People Very Nice because “it was not respectful enough of his culture”. Bean was then amused to see the performer in the jihadist comedy film Four Lions. Scott Coltman might grab most of the limelight as he is rarely off stage, but the whole cast excel in this delight of a show, servants to both kinds of comedy, verbal and visual. I accept that it is a huge question whether or not you can write outside of your own culture’ … Richard Bean talking about his play Pitcairn, pictured. Photograph: Alastair Muir/RexI tell him this is all fat. But I need a wage, I haven’t eaten since last night. But I don’t get paid until the end of the week, and I can’t stop thinking about CHIPS.

Bamigboye, Baz. "Breaking Baz: The Musical Comedy Romance Of 'Guys & Dolls'; James Corden Eyes Return To London Stage; The Marvel Of Julianne Moore In 'Sharper' ". Deadline . Retrieved 4 March 2023. Original director Nicholas Hytner revealed in a 2023 interview that he and James Corden were planning a revival of the play following Corden's return to the UK after hosting The Late Late Show. According to Hytner, the revival will take place either at the Bridge Theatre, where Hytner serves as artistic director, or on the West End in late 2023 or early 2024. [16] Casts (Original National Theatre production) [ edit ] CharacterCaptivate have often made their basic sets a virtue rather than a hindrance and so it is here, with John Knox and Sandy Queenan’s use of three reversible flats and a bench, just right. Beginning performances 4 February 2013, Rufus Hound took over the title role, with Arthur returning to the role on 23 September 2013 after his run with the tour. Other replacements throughout the run would include Hugh Sachs as Harry Dangle, Angela Griffin as Dolly and Kellie Shirley as Pauline, reprising her role from the tour. I say ‘yes’, he says ‘I’d like you to play a song for my mother’. I said ‘no problem, where is she?’

He said ‘Tasmania’ So I nutted him. This little bloke Roscoe Crabbe seen all this and offers me a week’s work in Brighton, says he needs a bit of muscle. One Man, Two Guvnors originally opened at the National Theatre in 2011, with a West End opening later that same year, before moving to Broadway in April 2012. The National Theatre will begin its programme of National Theatre At Home live-streams tonight (April 2), from 7pm, with One Man, Two Guvnors. (See the NT's YouTube channel for further details.)I watched the live performance of One Man, Two Guvnors over the summer during the National Theatre at Home, and then again recently on PBS. I found this play a great piece of British comedy and improvisation, especially James Corden's Tony award winning performance. Not initially knowing there were two different versions of the play, I later decided to request the U.K. AND U.S. editions of the play from the library to compare and contrast the texts. There might be a discarded bag of chips in here. No! I can’t go through the bins! Must stop thinking about CHIPS.
