About this deal

Coma ( saggital coma flare) often causes weird smeared blobs to appear around bright points of light in the corners of fast or wide lenses at large apertures. In lenses that have it, coma goes away as stopped down. Because of those characteristic and its fixed focal length, this lens is ideal for portrait. It is also good for candid portraiture such as in wedding. For Nikon pro wedding shooters, this lens is one of must have lens.

There are no lateral color fringes on the D800, D3 or D7000 on which I tested it. These cameras correct these fringes automatically. Also, don’t forget that the 85mm f/1.4G is a pro-level lens, which means that it comes with better build quality, higher quality glass inside, Nano-coating, 9-blade diaphragm vs 7 (for better bokeh when stopped down) and Nikon NPS support. For most enthusiasts wanting to get great portraits, the 85mm f/1.8G would do a phenomenal job, but those who want a pro-grade lens that stands a level above in terms of rendering capability are still better off with the 85mm f/1.4G. Personally, I own both and use them quite a bit professionally. I prefer the 85mm f/1.8G for its faster and more reliable focusing, but if I want to shoot wide open and get amazing bokeh, the 85mm f/1.4G still has its place in my bag. NIKON D750 + 85mm f/1.4 @ 85mm, ISO 100, 1/1250, f/2.5 Nikon 85mm f/1.4G vs Nikon 105mm f/1.4E When used on a DX camera, it gives angles of view similar to what a 129mm lens gives when used on an FX or 35mm camera. The only way this lens could be improved would be to add AFS, to promote quiet focusing as opposed to improving focus speed, and to utilize the more modern lens hood mounting system. The screw mount for the hood can be a pain when using filters, otherwise the hood stays on most of the time. Late 1980s ~ early 1990s AF cameras like the N90s, N70 and F4 will focus just fine. You'll have Program and Shutter-priority modes, but lose Manual and Aperture-priority since you have no way to set the aperture on the camera or on the lens. The 85mm f/1.4 AF-D (1995-2010) is out, simply because of its clumsy auto-manual focus switch. Pros loved its optics, but good riddance to all the focus-mode fiddling. Having done over 500 shots with the new lens I have a pretty good feeling what the overall performance of the new lens is. Sharpness/contrast The Nikon 85mm f/1.4G gets as sharp in the corners as in the center when stopped down to f/2.8, whereas the Nikon 85mm f/1.4D never gets sharp in the corners, even at f/8.

Distance information is relayed to the camera, so the Nikon body can do all the advanced exposure-related stuff with this lens. But this is true for all the alternatives too. [+] Like all Nikkor manual focus AI-s lenses, the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 AI-s is built to the highest mechanical standards of any lens ever made.

These aren't crops from images at 100%, either. These are only crops from the center of D300 images at 50%. A full-size print at this size would be only about 14x21" (35x50cm) Every detail was considered in the making of the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G, resulting in a remarkable, versatile lens. Nikon's exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides ultra-fast, ultra-quiet autofocus operation with seamless manual focus override. Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) and Nano Crystal Coat (N) work together to virtually eliminate ghosting and lens flare and to assure uniform colour balance and contrast. Technical Terms:

Let’s have a look at the technical data and make some comparison to similar lenses. We’ve rated the features with a [+] (or [++]), when it’s better than average or even state of the art, a [0] if it’s standard or just average, and [-] if there’s a disadvantage. I've had a couple die of other Nikon AFS lenses die on me, so if this lens' internal AF motor dies, it's got to go in for repair.

Cast aluminum, anodized and enameled. Engraved markings filled with different colors of paint coded to the depth-of-field scale. This effect is worst wide-open, and reduces at smaller apertures, so I'd not worry in the daytime, even with an uncoated filter.

For people on a size, weight or cash budget, the 85/1.8 AF-D is a far more practical lens. The 2/3 of a stop isn't particularly noticeable, the 85/1.8 often focuses faster, it has optics as good or better than the older lenses, but the f/1.8 85mm requires using the camera's AF mode switch to get between auto and manual focus. The 85/1.8 has been a winner ever since its introduction in 1987; don't pass it up. AF speed is as we expect. It's a little slower than the 85mm f/1.8 AF-D, and the same to maybe a little faster than the 85mm f/1.4 G.

At f/6.3: Waterfall, 28 November 2013. Nikon D610, Nikon 85mm f/1.4 G, f/6.3 at 1/640 at ISO 100, Auto ADR, VIVID Picture Control with 6 sharpening and +3 saturation, Athentech Perfectly Clear. Full resolution (5 MB). The waterfall isn't flat, so not everything is in focus. Advanced Nano Crystal Coat minimizes ghosting and flare, enhancing image clarity across a broad wavelength spectrum This is because the spherical aberration issues which define the cones of confusion, and thus the bokeh, also vary by wavelength. This is called spherochromatism.
