About this deal

Fouts’s recollections of animal researcher Dr. William Lemmon, Washoe’s owner, are especially disquieting. The animal research community has long insisted their ranks care about animal welfare and don’t wish to cause unnecessary suffering, but the history of the behavior of some prominent researchers sheds light on why people who care about animals tend to distrust these assurances.

This is a powerful, life-changing book. It is a fluid mixture of entertaining narrative, heart-breaking details about the treatment of chimpanzees in laboratories, and engaging discourse about evolutionary theory, the development of language in chimps and humans, etc. I don’t like this type of stuff in my romance books, I try to avoid it. The date with the other character probably wouldn’t have bothered me if it happened before the MC’s make out sesh and Warren sharing some deep personal stuff. In fact, the only situation where someone’s next of kin automatically has the legal right to make decisions on their behalf is when the person is under 18 and their next of kin is their parent or legal guardian. Who is the next of kin? However, the next of kin has no specific legal rights and would not have the right to make decisions about health and care. If someone wanted their next of kin to have the right to make these types of decisions on their behalf, they would need to formally bestow these rights with a power of attorney. In cases where this was not possible, a next of kin would have to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as a deputy. Next of kin after a death There’s a lot of confusion around the term as it’s generally thought to hold more legal standing than it does. Many people believe that their next of kin can automatically take on legal rights and responsibilities on their behalf, but this is not the case. This person is usually their parent(s), but if there are no parents, the child’s next of kin would be their legal guardian - an individual who has been given legal authority to take care of them and make decisions on their behalf.

While you are free to choose whoever you deem to have the closest relationship with to be your next of kin, a lot of people generally follow the above guidelines. Next of kin rights and responsibilities Will's insistence that "people like [Leila] don't get convicted" was laughable. She's a woman of colour?????? No Will, they don't put people like YOU in prison *sarcasm*. As per usual, I wanted to whoop Will's ass... but what's new. Still waiting for a likeable fictional husband LOL. Also on trial are social norms: Are there different accepted "rules" for female executives than male executives? Your best option is to make a legally-binding will that clearly states your exact wishes for when the time comes.Part Three – Six weeks after the verdict. And, boy oh boy, did those twists just keep on coming. What a mind blowing conclusion.

Leeming manages to get well behind enemy lines when something goes wrong with his ship. Since he can't land it properly (you know, with the pointy end up and the fins end down) he has to crash land it on his side, and he finds himself trapped on a bureaucratic planet so far behind the lines than nobody really knows what a human is. Leila Syed is charged with the manslaughter of her nephew Max, for having left him by accident in her car in unbearable heat, and so opens a court room drama that reveals a conspiracy of lies, hidden secrets, deception, intriguing couple dynamics and sibling rivalry both in and out of the court room. I love how HBY handled everything with such care in this book. From the relationships between Chloe and her birth mom, the system, the relationship between Chloe, warren and Luke, but especially the conflict at the end was worked out so realistically! When Leila Syed takes a call from her brother in law Andrew, asking why she didn’t drop his three year old son Max off at nursery that morning, the panic and realisation of what she has just done hits her, and it means their lives are about to come crashing down in the most unimaginable and tragic way. An LPA is a legal document which lets you state exactly who you would want to manage your financial affairs and any healthcare needs in the event that you should lose the mental capacity to do so yourself. This way, you get the peace of mind knowing that your affairs will be handled sensibly and in a way that you would want if anything should happen to you. What follows is an explosive, high-profile trial, that will tear the family apart. But as the case progresses it becomes clear there’s more to this incident than meets the eye… In some situations, a person’s next of kin might need to be identified without input from the person themselves. This can happen when someone is temporarily unable to comment, for example after being suddenly taken ill or having an accident. Should anything happen to a child under the age of 18-years-old, their next of kin would be the person (or people) who has the legal right to take care of them and make decisions for them.

Fouts argues that it is a mistake to equate language with speech, that speech and the communication through gestures require the same cognitive basis for language in the brain, and that primates have had language capabilities for millions of years. If you enjoy the “grumpy guy tries to keep his distance” to “okay fine we can be friends” to “it turns out i’m in love with you” journey, then i highly recommend this! This was such a sweet story full of cute moments, the perfect amount of tension, a funny younger brother, a hot guy holding a tiny baby, and soo much love. The romance is slow burn and build. Warren's a jerk at first because he's trying to maintain some distance between them. Chloe's all sunshine and a bit of awkward and lots of secret insecurities while Warren comes off as aloof and smirky. But that's the glory of roommatedom (totally a word) and the walls start coming down, figuratively, as they have a simmering attraction, a lovely budding friendship, and then all the adorable (and sometimes steamy) romance. I really loved them together and the ways each supported the other. this was so cute, it’s a slow burn but so sweet romance about two people trying their best for their own families and making their own, blended family in the process. and the banter between these too is so cute. I'm not sure if the author intentionally wrote Yasmin as vain, vapid, and ... is there a "v" word for flirtatious LOL? Anyways... I just didn't like her and unfortunately it made it hard to empathize at times. Her resentment toward Leila – whom kept her alive and out of the dreaded foster care system – was bizarre? And then there were inconsistencies in Leila's character. At times she was soft-spoken, demure, a real blend into the wallpaper type, and then she showed flashes of ruthlessness, cold-heartedness, shrewdness that were largely unprovoked. Again, maybe this was intentional by the author to create complexity, but it wasn't the type of complexity necessary for this story. In the event that the deceased person passed away with no spouse, civil partner, children or parents then their siblings are considered to be the next of kin. In addition to his insights and observations of chimpanzees, the author also makes frequent side-trips into evolution, communication, linguistics and legal personhood, which readers may or may not find interesting depending upon their point of view. We know from the beginning what happened to 3-year-old Max, son of Leila's sister Yasmin and her husband, and the first couple of chapters were difficult to read. I was almost wishing that the blurb hadn't put the circumstances in our faces like that. I think it would've had more of an impact if we hadn't been privy to this information. But that's just me. Leila, who was supposed to drop Max at nursery school on the way to work, is charged with manslaughter and faces a jury trial to determine her guilt or innocence. Authorities press charges and what follows is an emotionally pulverizing courtroom trial that tears a family apart from the outside and within.
