It's the least powerful of the bunch as it uses the A14 chip, while the Air and Pro use the same processors you'll find in MacBooks. The iPad Mini sits in between with its A15 chip. The processor primarily dictates speed and the tablet's ability to cope with demanding apps.
What does that mean for you? It means improved performance on this newest iPad, although it’s not going to be a gamechanger – this tablet won’t be as speedy as the iPad Air 4, which touts the new A14 Bionic chipset, or one of the most recent iPhone models. The 10.2-inch iPad features A13 Bionic, Center Stage, True Tone, and now starts with double the storage, all at an incredible value Speaking of video calls and the FaceTime camera leads us to one of the most significant differences between this tablet and virtually any other one in the iPad lineup: Apple has finally moved the FaceTime camera to a long edge of the device. Now, instead of having to remind ourselves to look at the left side of the iPad when it's in landscape mode, which is how we do all of our video calls, we can simply look directly at the screen, or at that thin bezel just above it. It's so much more natural – and we hope iPad air owners are jealous. Apple also increased the brightness to 500 nits, which was noticeable when we compared this iPad to last year’s version. You may not realize it without comparing the two side by side, but it’s a useful upgrade using an iPad outdoors in the daytime.
Apple's newest iPad is more of the same, but that's okay
The new 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro will be available in silver and space grey finishes with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB configurations. In the ‘compromises’ column, storage starts at a measly 32GB – you'll want to buy the 128GB model if you want to store and edit photos and videos. But it's still hard not to be impressed with this 'basic' iPad if the iPad Pro or iPad Air are out of your budget.
More generally, the iPadOS platform is a true hybrid platform that can do many of the things that were once the sole purview of desktops. When we wanted to edit 10-year-old video clips, we attached a USB-C-to-USB adapter, plugged in an old flash drive, and then browsed the drive for the video clips through the Adobe Premiere Rush app. It was just like attaching a hard drive on a PC. Similarly, it was easy to drag images from Photos onto the flash drive and then upload them onto another system for this review.
