About this deal

Mount Gay Distilleries has released several limited edition rums over the course of their history to honor their nautical heritage or commemorate important occasions in the history of Barbados. [7] Visitors Centre in Parish of St. Michael Barbados sets itself apart in the Caribbean as the only coral-based island which, in turn, allows it to produce some of the purest water in the world. Using their own private well, Mount Gay draws this water through to power its production process. Local Barbadian molasses tends to have higher sugar content which leads to better yields of flavor. Mount Gay Rum is produced by Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd. of Barbados, the easternmost island of the West Indies. The oldest surviving deed for the company is from 1703, making Mount Gay Rum the world's oldest commercial rum distillery. [1] The current majority shareholder of Mount Gay Distilleries since 1989 is Rémy Cointreau. [2] [3] Mount Gay Rum is sold in 110 countries, [4] and its primary export market is the United States of America. [5] History [ edit ] Caffall also has fond memories of pairing Mount Gay rum with spicy drunken noodles with Napa cabbage and sesame, from a weekly tiki pop-up at Fort Defiance in Brooklyn. “I can’t think of anything I want more right now than those noodles with a cold Planter’s Punch made with Mount Gay.”The ageing process is particularly unpredictable in the tropical Caribbean climate, and at Mount Gay, we prefer to talk about maturing. In two or three years, our rums can reach the same level of maturity as an eau-de-vie aged for two or three times as long in a temperate climate. The island of Barbados is formed of coral limestone, a porous stone, which acts as a natural filter for the groundwater deep beneath the island. Thus filtered, this water is some of the purest in the world. Wes/Pirate… may I first thank you for your great contributions toward understanding and promoting real, pure and unaltered rums. Your efforts are rightfully respected, and not just by me. Mount Gay Eclipse rum has a very distinctive flavour. There are other rums made on the island, but Mount Gay is the oldest and most prominent. [16] Mount Gay Rum Visitors Centre". Fodor's. 31 December 2008. Without question, Barbados is the "most British" island in the Caribbean.

She joined the Mount Gay team in 2014 as the Quality Assurance Manager and followed the same path as Allen Smith within the distillery—and she continues to be inspired by his legacy at Mount Gay. Trudiann now shares the expertise and secrets of Mount Gay’s rums. Her capacity to understand the subtle balance between scientific precision and the instinct necessary for the production of rum is one of her greatest strengths. The combination of each step of the process makes our rum truly unique: from the selection of sugarcane molasses to the fermentation in wooden casks, the distillation using both column and pot still, the maturation in different types of oak casks and finally the expertise of our Master Blender [Trudiann Branker] during the blending process,” says Raphaël Grisoni, Managing Director of Mount Gay. “The unique profile of our rums come down to the blend of column and pot still rums and the aging process in Bourbon, Cognac and American Whiskey barrels under the influence of a tropical climate.” You can classify rum in dozens of different ways taking into account the different hues, how long they’ve been aged, and the type of barrel in which they’ve been aged. For our purposes, though, a simpler view breaks them down into three categories: light, dark, and spiced, with an alcohol content ranging from 20% to 75%.

Mount Gay Eclipse: An aged rum developed in 1911 and named for the total solar eclipse and the passage of Halley's comet in 1910. P. J. T. (13 January 2013). "Mount Gay Rum now a household name". The Barbados Advocate. Archived from the original on 2 January 2014 . Retrieved 20 January 2013. The distributors of Mount Gay rum are sponsors of the nonprofit United States Sailing Association. [14] They also sponsor over 110 regatta events worldwide, with approximately 50 of those based in the United States. Mount Gay gives away distinctive red hats to top competitors at its sponsored regattas. Now that the price seems to have come down a bit, and I've done quite a bit more tasting of this and other rums, I'm appreciating it more and more. In many ways it seems more "grown up" than many other over-sweetened rums on the market. I think part of this is Mount Gay's attempt to dig into the whiskey market—a drink that is more highly esteemed (and priced) in this country. That certainly manifests itself in the flavor profile, which is dry, oaky, and slightly spicy. With characteristic sweetness and a caramel nose, you certainly wouldn't confuse it for whiskey. This is a proud rum. I give it a 7.5, and round up for its somewhat unique spot in the market. With a little more aging to polish off its somewhat abrasive edges, it would be a solid 8.
