Orla has moved to London from Ireland in pursuit of a career in the music industry- Orla sings, produces and plays guitar, so music is a huge part of her existence. She made the emotional announcement live on air during Greg James' Radio 1 Breakfast Show. It was also announced that fellow Radio 1 DJ, Clara Amfo, would take over Annie's Future Sounds show from July, while Danny Howard would take over the Radio 1's Dance Party show. On 15 February 2015, it was announced she had taken over Zane Lowe's Radio 1 evening show airing Monday-Thursdays 19:00 to 21:00. [18] However, The Mess We’re In is a book with a main character that you get entirely frustrated with, her decision making is just so off and you cannot fathom why she would do what she does. But that is one of the best parts in my opinion! ¡I just love a flawed main character!!!! I wonder what our little gathering must look like from her perspective: a girl, blushing with pleasure in the corner of a small, steamy restaurant, surrounded by laughing faces. I wonder if I look comfortable in my skin to her. Does she think I belong here?

Orla is Irish and moves to London in her early twenties in 2001. She lives with her friend Neema and Neema’s brother Kesh. Kesh is in a band called Shiva and the rest of the band live there too. I could barely read this one fast enough. It absolutely fizzes with the energy of youth as Orla navigates her new life in the city. Living with a band on the brink of stardom and trying to find her own feet in the music business, her new life is full of opportunity and excitement. Very touching descriptions of lonely older generation Irish, both women and men who left Ireland and stayed in London. It’s so interesting the conflict you have when you do a live radio show. Everything in me [during the interview] was screaming ‘This is going on too long’, because that’s how I’m trained: live radio, I need to play a song. But I didn’t want to stop her, and she was on a roll, she was just going. Your job there, if you can imagine a galloping horse, your job is just to slightly guide them in a direction where they’re going to be touching on subjects people want to hear. That’s all it is.” In conclusion, Annie Mac is a truly captivating figure in the world of entertainment. FAQs

I adored the narrative structure and how Mary and TJ’s stories weave together. MacManus’ references to historical events, whether that be cultural, political or technological, are carefully placed in the narrative. Cultural references are not forced but are inserted naturally into the narrative. It can be easy to force references into a story to get a sense of place and space but every word of MacManus’ writing has purpose.Channel 4 To Air All-Night 'House Party' With Grandmaster Flash, Annie Mac And No Ad Breaks". I enjoyed all the characters, it kind of gave me a YA feel, in a good way. It reminded me a lot of How To Build A Girl by Caitlin Moran. The flaws of Orla kind of added to this as well, and I liked Annie's perspective on this at the end. This is another book that is set SO close to an area I use to live which made me enjoy the story just a little extra haha. How does she feel about quitting her job at the BBC now, nearly two years on? “It still feels new. It feels amazing to have been able to have the space and the choice to do it, to be able to walk away from a job like that. It’s not something I take for granted.” Gerry blinks, looking at his pint, and says, - we don’t all get the luxury of belonging where we’re born. Two years later, I got my first job at the BBC. I remember ringing my Dad from the desk at Radio 1 and saying: “I got a permanent job!” He’s always been so supportive of whatever I’ve wanted, but like a lot of parents he was keen on me being secure, so getting a job at this big British institution reassured him that I would be sorted.
