Keeping houseplants alive can be a strenuous task. You need to place them in the proper location to make sure they get the right amount of light, and you have to water them correctly — because there is such a thing as overwatering your plants. Although water is, thankfully, easy to find in most places, proper lighting may not be. You might live in a place that doesn't face the sun, your home may not have a lot of windows or perhaps putting your plants in a certain place in your house doesn't fit your aesthetic. That's where indoor grow lights come in: You can use them to properly care for your plants no matter your lighting situation. This seedling grow light utilizes Samsung’s LM301H 3500K white spectrum, plus 470nm blue LEDs. Out of all the LED grow lights I’ve seen, the HLG 300L B-Spec is the most dedicated seedling and veg spectrum available. Recommended Distance From Plants: This doesn’t mean a full spectrum grow light can’t start seeds. A grow light that emits full spectrum light can start seeds, but only the blue portion of the spectrum will be absorbed by the seedlings. In reality it’s not the distance from the plants that matters. It’s the intensity of light measured at the leaves ( read more about light intensity here). So the logical solution is to determine the grow light height where your plants receive the ideal amount of light intensity for the respective phase of growth: 200-250 micromoles for seedlings and 300 to 400 micromoles of PPFD for vegetative phase plants.

If you’re maintaining a mother plant you’ll only need a blue spectrum, and you’ll need a light that’s emits a blue spectrum that’s intense enough for a full sized mother plant. Having a light dedicated for this purpose is a smart choice. High-intensity discharge (HID) lights: These lights are the most powerful lights for growing plants — perfect for grow spaces or larger plants. Typically, these are used in indoor farms or controlled-environment labs. The light they produce is both full spectrum and brighter than any other type of light. Though these lights are extremely powerful, with great power comes great cost. These are the most expensive lights for indoor plants and will require the most energy to run. On top of that, they produce a great amount of heat, so you'll definitely need a way to extract the heat or cool the space. You can see in the spectrum image above that there’s little or no red spectrum, so you won’t be able to use this grow light for flowering. If you need to light a large grow space for vegetative growth, consider the Scynce LED Raging Kale 2. You want to find a grow light that emits light in the 4000 to 6000 Kelvin range. That range contains the most blue light.

This again depends partly on the size of mother plant you require and the space you have, you can keep micro mothers under T5 strip lights in small pots if you only require a few cuttings at a time. Or if you need large mothers CDM lights or metal halide bulbs up to 400w or even 600w, LED lights are very suitable for mother plants and you can get ones to match any size of mother you need. CFL bulbs and other fluorescents are ideal for most small to average mother plant requirements as long as you don’t need to be taking cuttings too regularly. The ideal environment for keeping a mother plant in is the same as you would have for vegetative growth a temperature range of 18-27Cis fine with the difference between the high and low temps being no more than 5C ideally (eg 25-28C lights on 20-23C lights off). Humidity is important to keep an eye on as if using CDM or halide bulbs or indeed sodiums the humidity will be much lower than under LED or flourescent lighting. If you’re using this grow light to start seeds, you want to hang it on the higher side near 32 inches. If you’re using the 300L in the vegetative growth phase, you should hang it closer to 24 inches. Watts or wattage (W) - the amount of power which a piece of electrical equipment uses. LED bulbs are more energy efficient with a lower wattage, and will last longer than incandescent bulbs with higher wattage.

The increased sensitivity to light during these growth phases – which requires hanging your grow light higher than you would during flowering phase. This is why many of these seedling & vegetative phase grow lights emit lower PPFD readings. It’s because if you put too much PPFD on plants in these growth phases, you’ll risk burning them.Plants photosynthesise and grow when they are provided with PAR light (Photosynthetically Active Radiation). A second important factor when choosing the best LED grow light for starting seeds is the strength of the light. Many people choose to start seeds and vegetative growth with weak blue grow lights. The exact distance depends on the power of your grow light. A 300 to 400 watt grow light could hang 18-24 inches from the canopy. A stronger light would need to be dimmed or kept at a larger distance above the plants if running full power.
